Ford Announces Plans To Self-Destruct Starting In 2021

The folks of ZeroHedge had probably taked some good weed to find a title for that article unless there's more than meet the eyes.
    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-0...-starting-2021
Ford CEO, Mark Fields, sat down with Bloomberg to discuss plans to introduce a completely autonomous car by 2021. The only real problem we see with that plan is that it pretty much ensures their own demise. That said, they're pretty much doomed anyway so might as well go for it.

The company said it plans to have a fully autonomous vehicle -- no steering wheel, no gas or brake pedals -- available by 2021 for ride-hailing services.

“We see the autonomous car changing the way the world moves once again,” Chief Executive Officer Mark Fields said today at Ford’s research lab in Palo Alto, California. “They address a whole host of safety, social and environmental issues.”

Like Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Ford will skip the interim steps of driver-assisted technology as a way to evolve toward full autonomy. Its plan to deploy self-driving cars in ride-hailing and ride-sharing fleets is similar to what General Motors Co. aims to do with Lyft Inc. Ford’s 2021 scheduled start matches BMW’s ambitious timeframe.

“We believe in our plan that taking the driver out of the loop is really important,” Fields said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. The automaker couldn’t find a sensible way through the “no-man’s land” -- determining exactly when a robotic car should to try to re-engage a human driver in an emergency.

So what do we mean when we say an autonomous car pretty much ensures Ford's demise? To be clear, we're not specifically targeting Ford...the whole auto industry is in serious trouble when truly autonomous driving arrives. Below is a little math to help illustrate the point.

If it does indeed lacks any driver controls I agree with them.
Just how many does Ford expect to be able to sell?
What company is going to sink money into a vehicle that doesn't allow for a back up to the autonomous system (driver)?
System acts up. Oops. Can't drive it manually. Call a tow truck.

If it was my business I wouldn't risk it.

In theory a vehicle such as this, a normal person wouldn't buy. People that hop on a bus, taxi or train don't drive, nor own it.

    Think "Fleet Sales" ....................

If a system acts up in your car today, do you push it or call a tow truck?

It is a completely different mode of transportation, trying to think of it the way we use a car today simply doesn't work.

    Here Try this:

I have a lawnmower, it sits in my garage, when the time comes, I top off the tank, fire it up and walk away, back and forth for about 1 1/2 hours.

My neighbor, a doctor, that has more money than time, doesn't own a lawnmower, she makes a phone call, before leaving for work, and when she returns home, the grass is cut, the mower that cuts her lawn does have a driver, but she in no way could use or drive that thing, just like a city bus or train.

Re: Ford Announces Plans To Self-Destruct Starting In 2021

My understanding is that they're planning not necessarily a new model for sale as much as they're planning another "mobility solution" predicated entirely on this new vehicle.

It SOUNDS like they're keeping it in-house rather than selling it to ride-sharing companies, making Ford the "mobility solutions" company they and every other automaker has said they plan to be in the face of rising autonomy.

What I want to know is, what's up with GM's EN-V concepts?

I mean -- every automaker is trying things as it has become clear the old business model "the ore business" as Ford calls it is going away. For has not invested in anyone like Lyft, but they do have home-brew carshare in Oakland (similar to Daimler's Car2Go and BMW's GoFurther (do I remember their name right?)

The shortsighted vile from ZeroHedge is silly and .. well shortsighted.

You're missing out on an income opportunity with your neighbor and your idle lawn mower. Could call it uber mower.

I remember when they posted images of cars on container ships from back during the GFC and claimed inventories were recently piling up.

I found their article about lack of workers for new Mexican plants to be totally laughable,
I mean come on, it's not like people won't move to another region in Mexico if job prospects are better..

And, that article was more about bashing NAFTA and complaining about lost UAW jobs than
anything factual about what is actually happening in Mexico..

Ford consolidated Super Duty production in Kentucky and switches Mexican plant to Fiesta
Ford splits with Blue Diamond/Navistar in Mexico and brings Medium Duty to Avon Lake
Focus moves to Mexico in 2018 so that presumably, Ranger can be built at Michigan AP.

Currently, about one sixth of Ford's US sales comes for Mexico built product.
Funny how some reporters don't see the up side to anything.

I'm working on my autonomous lawnmower as we speak, once perfected, It'll be cutting all the lawns in the sub while I'm at work.

Actually, why not outsource driving to an Indian call center, they could remote chauffeur your autonomous car...

they already make them. They operate like the roombas do. Only can do certain amount of lawn though, and it docks itself to recharge between cuts..

They'd have been better off announcing a George Jetson vehicle by 2021...
    85 cars since 1975....
    Good night and good luck.
