    2023 Ford F-150 Electric Teased

Ford officially revealed plans for the all-electric F-150, which is arriving Mid 2022. They began construction of a new facility at the Dearborn Truck plant to accommodate the BEV. Ford says it will be the fastest and most powerful F-150 ever, but no specifics were given.

Ford's live press event today did slip in a preview of the front-end, which incorporates a prominent light-bar, which seems to be a prerequisite for EV trucks?

The F-150 Electric does have a unique platform with an IRS and other goodies, but much of the truck is based on the new 2021 F-150. It's Ford's first BEV with motors designed in-house.

F-150 EV may just be a regular F-150 with some styling amendments, although it looks like they are aiming for the biggest light bar.

I'm so tired of electric vehicles having to look like they're from the future. But if you're going to look ridiculous, at least go all the way, and to that end the Cybertruck actually looks good because it doesn't split the difference.

Hummer also has a big light-bar.

So what is the latest thinking on EV trucks regarding popularity? We already know they are capable and price should be comparable. I personally no longer doubt how popular they will be.

Re: 2023 Ford F-150 Electric Teased

    Is price comparable however?

EV Trucks have some big drawbacks alongside their strengths, the biggest is towing range. But since most trucks will never leave pavement, it doesn't make sense to assume every truck needs to serve every possible customer need like a regular F-150.

It does look like Ford is taking a more integrated approach to the EV truck, slipping it into their existing F-150 lineup, similar to how they treat hybrids. Essentially they are fitting the battery between the frame rails, it's a very long and narrow battery pack with about 50% more capacity than the Mach E. This allows them to preserve truck configuration flexibility, although I wouldn't be surprised if it's just the popular Super Crew configuration. Still, that's a pretty small battery by EV Truck standards so range might be a particular issue with F-150 over the competition, although that remains to be seen. F-150's huge advantage is its lightweight construction, that gives them some advantage.

We'll see how this unfolds, Ford is certainly not as aggressive on BEVs as GM and has surprisingly little to say about its future in that regard, but Ford has also sold way more electrified vehicles than GM and continues to do so because of Hybrids which GM has no interest in.

I'm not that excited by the ICE to EV conversion approach, it usually comes with too much compromise and poor design. Therefore I would actually say the F-150 EV is by far the least interesting EV truck coming out, but the most important. I'm just curious to see how much they intend to produce, Ford's EV manufacturing infrastructure is relatively undeveloped.

I think what it is more than anything is that without the need for a traditional grille for a radiator/airflow to the engine, designers want/need to put something there, so these days it winds up being a lightbar.

    I did a small edit
As to towing range, we all know these will replace the E Class on the morning commute, no one will be towing anything.. for the most part, but it will make for interesting videos from car mag 'experts' towing stuff...

It's an interesting problem. The grille is the most noticeable element of a brand's design DNA. I can't imagine BMW without their iconic kidney grille.

and 10+ years of designers making the front MORE and MORE grill by "eliminating" front bumper bars and ever smaller "headlights" - to the point they are NOT headlights at all but decorative place holders with the "foglights" being the actual headlights

I don't particularly care for Ford's new frontal lighting technique. The outer edge halo effect.
