2017 Lincoln MKZ Spied: Cribbing Continental (C&D)

What It Is: A Lincoln MKZ sedan, spied wearing telling camouflage around its front and rear ends. While everything between the MKZ’s wheels looks unchanged, the swirly cover-up applied to the front fascia, headlights, and hood hides a series of styling tweaks that aim to bring Lincoln’s mid-size luxury sedan in line with the newly debuted Continental flagship.

Why It Matters: The 2017 Continental, which was displayed as a concept at this year’s New York auto show, gave form not only to Lincoln’s swagger, but also its new design language. (Here are recent spy photos of the production Continental.) It may be slightly anodyne, but the new look definitively ditches the split-wing grille design currently applied to every other model in Lincoln’s lineup, and it appears that the company is going to transition many of its cars’ faces to match the Conti’s—and soon. The MKZ’s mid-cycle refresh is as good a time as any to slap on the new mug, and you should expect to see similar facelifts of additional models in the coming years.

Guess it should come as no surprise as they move away from the split wing. Interested to see this design move forward as the new MKX has the old split wing and isn't even out yet...

The split wing was never a success, should be interesting to see how this new more generic/conservative front end does.

The three chrome bars they stuck on the front end of the Fords was a dud too.

I'm mixed on this, as much as I like the Continental, a chop done here with a wing grille looked fantastic on the Continental, and would have gone a long way to bringing some credibility to the theme. Seems like they had an opportunity to stick it out, but tossed it just when things could get interesting.

Very bad idea to get rid of the split wing grille now that it finally looks good. They finally get it right and bail on it. By the time they finally get this new big Continental grille right on their lineup, they'll move onto something else. It's like Lincoln wants to fail. The face of their cars is going to be ugly with the Continental grille on anything but the Continental.

Re: 2017 Lincoln MKZ Spied: Cribbing Continental (C&D)

I thought the face had looked good on the MKZ but we'll see how this ends up working out. I'd like to see a re-shuffling of the engine lineup on the MKZ. Maybe have the 2.3T replace the 2.0T and instead of the 3.7L a more expensive 2.7TT option would be nice and be more "worth" the price premium as the 2.0T is a bit low on performance compared to the similarly priced TLX or Maxima, which have a V-6 standard. It'd also give the MKZ available power to compete more or less with the power levels of the FI 3.0L German sedans but in Lincoln's own, more relaxed and unique way as opposed to a sport sedan. A nice niche for the MKZ IMO. Only other thing is working on some interior material components, such as the center console, to keep it from looking too plasticky.

I'm also disappointed that they're dropping split-wing just as they got it right, but there is still a large group of people that didn't like it for whatever reason. I think they're trying to appease that group with the new, more conservative grille. I just hope that they chrome the grille like they did on the Continental Concept, which really gave it a rainfall kind of look.

Umm...yes it was for cars that were actually designed with it originally. Hence why they still use it.

Don't know about you, but I see 3 chrome bars.

I hope they go back to that and drop the "Kinetic Design". I haven't heard the phrase "Kinetic Design" in a while, so that's a good start.

If I had to guess, I bet that North America will get more say in the design of the next round of Ford vehicles. The Fusion was designed with North America in mind, and it has been a huge hit thus far. The same can't be said for the "Kinetic Cars" (other than maybe the Escape).

I hope it gets the AWD of the Focus RS. Lincoln needs a performance awd system if they are going to keep the FWD madness.

Is that something that could be added in a mid-cycle refresh?

Maybe, if it doesn't require a whole lot of modifying. My best guess is that it will have to wait for the next gen MKZ(if it's still named like that).
