radio stays on when door is opened

Does anyone know why my radio stays on after I open the door without the key in the ignition? This is intermittent problem. Is it a sensor or ignition switch going bad ????........It's a 2004 Silverado........... Thanks for your help MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

Re: radio stays on when door is opened

Not sure what it's like on newer vehicles, but I had the same problem with my '98 Sonoma last month.

In the Sonoma, there's a black switch that contacts the door. When the door closes, it pushes the switch in, which tells the Retained Accessory Power system (this is what keeps your radio and stuff working after the car's shut off) that the door is closed. When the door opens, it lets the switch back out and therefore shuts off the radio.

What happened in my truck was the switch was simply sticking. I would just have to poke it when I got out of the truck and the radio would switch off. After a day or so of doing this it must have loosened up whatever was making the switch stick as I haven't had any problems since.

So basically, look for something like that. Hope this helped.

I have the same problem with a 2006 Malibu in the family... only the driver door seems to be having this problem.
Thing is this model, if i recall correctly does not have the pin... any advice to where the button (or what the problem) might be in this car?

If our 2007 Malibu didn't get totaled a few months back I could run out and look.

The switch in the truck is right inside the door on the side of the lower dash.

I think he's saying that the radio will stay on forever if you don't turn it off-running down the battery.

Any added electrical accessories on this vehicle?

The switch on the Malibu is located in the door latch assy.

Switch is in the door handle also in the gmt-800s IIRC.

So could be a bad door handle switch or the RAP (retained accessory power) module.

Pull the radio fuse located under the hood driver's side for 60 seconds and reinstall. It might fix the problem IF the radio is the only thing that stays on. You'll probably have to reset your time and station presets. Let me know if this works.

There is no door pin switch (old school) so I guess I'm going to look for that door handle switch. If I'm lucky maybe I can pull the arm rest off or the lock panel to see if there is a switch in there sommmmmewhere.

Re: radio stays on when door is opened

Most likely it is the RAP relay. it should be located in the IP fuse block on the driver side. it is the easiest thing and quickest to try. swap it with another relay. if it fixes it, you know it needs a relay. if not then i would go after the latch or the latch circuits for the RAP relay. could be a broken wire in the door jamb on driver door, which would not allow signal from latch to command relay off.

I have the some problem with my 04. any door opened up will shut off the radio. im guessing its got to be the computer. Because the computer should shut every thing off after a few minutes. i ended up pulling 2 fuses to get things shut off. still a .08 draw on the battery but at least i dont have to take it to the dealer yet to replace the computer.

Wait, opening the doors shuts off the radio? It's supposed to do that. After you pull the key out of the ignition the radio should stay on until you open a door.

My 04 Silverado will do that on occasion too. It will time out eventually so no real biggie but it does seem to make a difference if I pull the key BEFORE opening the door. Also if it is in that state opening and closing the door again clears it.
