Out with the old... In with the new...

After four years with a 2005 Chevrolet Impala LS and 40,000 miles while on kid/college duty it was starting to have some issues that I didn't want to deal with. I was offered a fair trade in and figured it was time to move onto a new car.

When I purchased my Torrent over five years ago it was decided that we would move up in size/price to a Trailblazer/Envoy type of vehicle. Once the GMT-360's went away after 2009 options in the mid-size six cylinder BOF SUV market began to dwindle. The sole survivors are the Xterra and 4Runner.

Before I made my mind up, I drove an Equinox LT AWD V6, Enclave AWD, Tahoe LS 4WD, Pilot EX 4WD, Highlander SE 4WD and 4Runner SR5 4WD. At the end of the day I loved the Tahoe. The fact remained it was nearly 10K more than I wanted to spend and was too much truck for my needs. The Equinox was just to small and was a real pig on gas for the size. The Enclave was great looking but pretty long and still not BOF for light duty towing needs. The Pilot drove fine but I couldn't adjust to the look. The Highlander was a nice size but couldn't hold a candle to 4.0L BOF 4Runner. At the end of the day the 4Runner fit my needs the best.

I ended up getting a 2013 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD in Blizzard White Pearl with Sand Beige cloth interior and four options, premium paint, power front driver and passenger seat with sport cloth, carpeted floor mats and mud guards. I really like the vehicle it fits my needs perfectly. I couldn't justify buying a car from GM that didn't suit me just because GM made it. So far I am impressed with it especially the fuel economy in town I am averaging better than the Torrent.

I am sad I wasn't able to get another GM product but that is what happens when GM refuses to serve market segments they once did.

I really don't spend time at GMI for the GM vehicles.
This site is all about gushing new import owners, as it should be.

Enjoy your new ride. Your 4Runner may be the last vehicle of its type. It's a dying breed...at least in the US.

By the time I might be ready to buy a car, the Cadillac CTS wagon may no longer be available. So, my choice might be between the Volvo XC70 and Mercedes E-class wagon. If I was willing to go smaller, my choices might include the Audi A4 Allroad, BMW 3 series wagon or Volvo V60.

The most attractive to me though is the Volvo V60 with orange exterior and white interior. That reminds me of one of those orange/white popsicles or Crush or Fanta pop.

I too, like the TV show "Justified".

4wd 4Runner getting better city mileage than 2wd Torrent in town?

Equinox disqualified for not being BOF? So you were test driving a Pilot because....

Isn't this kind of a repost from your post yesterday in another thread?

The choice was made to sell it and let someone else deal with it. I drove an Equinox, Enclave, Tahoe, 4Runner, Highlander, and Pilot. At the end of the day I would have loved a Tahoe - it was just to much truck for my needs. (Plus it was pricey!) The Equinox was too small a compliant I have with my Torrent and got piss poor fuel economy with the LFX and AWD. I liked the Enclave however it was larger than what I was looking to fit in my garage. The Highlander was a nice size but didn't get the great fuel economy I expected. The Pilot was nice as well but I couldn't get past the looks. That left the 4Runner. It offered the BOF towing performance I want, reasonable fuel economy and seemed to be the best compromise on size and price. I have long said my next vehicle with be a 4Runner unless GM builds a Trailblazer... It happened I bought my first Toyota. I actual like it. If GM had a Trailblazer they would have got my 35K.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice.

I've tried a Honda Pilot Touring and really didn't like the 'tin can' feeling I got while driving it around.

Please let us know how the 4Runner works out for you.

I know what you mean. I really want a new 2014 Silverado, short bed, regular cab with the 6.2L but I know the 6.2L won't be available in that configuration. So I'm probably going to get a Toyota Camry!

Re: Out with the old... In with the new...

Time to change your screen name.

Anyway, I like these posts because they articulate something to GM that should show why people leave their brands. Here was a die-hard (supposedly) who said he wasn't going to be pushed into a CUV or a full-size just because GM decided those are the only SUV markets GM caters to. GM then loses a loyal customer to its "thorn in the side" Toyota. Truly a shame that this happens.

On the other hand, as someone who really enjoys their GMT360, I'll be one of those who moves up to a full-size before abandoning Chevrolet. However, it is important to note that I will be buying preowned as I can't fathom a $50k MSRP commuter no matter how nice at this point in my life (however, I have no problem letting someone else -- even the rental companies -- eat that depreciation).

Re: Out with the old... In with the new...

That's about the size of the SUV's I like. Love the Tahoe but it's too much SUV for my needs. If I was to buy an SUV today I'd likely get a Grand Cherokee. It's about the right size for what I want. Ideally GM would make modern K5 Blazers but I know there isn't a good business case for that today. Just wishful thinking.

Congrats on the purchase gm4life08, I don't like Toyota but the 4Runner is definitely not a bad choice, especially in that class of vehicle which GM doesn't compete in. But to be fair of GM, I"m glad the Trailblazer/Envoy refresh was axed in favor of the Camaro. I believe the Camaro was the right choice and brought a lot of joy back to the Chevy name. Combined with Transformers, it really got Chevy back into the spot light.

Thank you. I am sure you caught hell around here when you got an Accord too. They are very nice cars. Sadly the midsize BOF SUV segment is one GM no longer serves so they didn't get my money. Simple as that.
