I own a large, RWD, GM, Union made vehicle

It's a 2000 Chevrolet Astro. My parents were thinking of getting rid of it, and being a former owner and huge fan of the M-vans (Astro, Safari) I offered to take it.

188 thousand family owned miles have taken a bit of a toll on it. I intend to fix her up and do some slight customizing. First things on the custom list after it's running 100% are:

    1. Bumper cover. Probably aftermarket, not sure yet though
    2. Seats. Either from a conversion van, or a top-trim-level LT Astro. The current ones are the cloth covered examples that appear in all of GM's vans and they suck.

I don't know yet what else I want to do. I like both the "rugged" look that people have done with these vans and the lowered street look.

Oh, and the Taurus has new wheels after I fubar'd one of the old ones.

Those need to be refinished this winter. We use tons of salt here and it isn't nice to wheels.
There's no apology for stupid, boy!

Congrats on the new (used) ride. May not be a looker, but them Astros sure go the distance.

Congrats, you got a great machine there. These were some of GM's finest work. Tough vans, useful as all get out, and can be customized a million ways just like the big ones. I had two fullsize Chevy vans ('81 & '85, the latter a conversion) and I had a ton of fun customizing 'em, so I know you'll enjoy your Astro!

I suggest you buy a 1st-gen xB, paint it to match, and dinghy tow it everywhere you go.

Cool! As a kid I wanted a SWB Safari, the one with no windows between the C and D pillars... I wanted 4 buckets and rallye wheels, black with a red stripe along the molding... basically a Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport-style Astro. Enjoy your van... there can't be too many of those left as the years go on, especially after cash for cars!

My parents had a 1993 Safari for five years. It was a pretty nice vehicle, enjoy. It drove pretty well, had great visibility and tons more space than any of the unibody minivans of its day, but did tend to suck gas. My dad got better fuel economy on his 1999 E-150 V8.

Funny you refer to your van as large. Wasn't the Astro/Safari originally supposed to be a minivan?

Astros are the greatest vans ever! I've always wanted one with a slight drop on some 18"s and a kick-ass audio system.

May I offer a suggestion as to an idea for the future exterior appearance?

    Great ride, King Riffle.

Gotta admit that when I saw the thread title, I figured the tiny car 4 banger dudes would form a posse and come lynch you.

Good on ya for keeping them at bay.

    Nice van.

I must say out of the odd sleeper combos I have wanted over the years, an slightly worn Astro with a Ty/ Sy drivetrain and AWD with about 500 hp and 600 lb ft I find highly appealing!

Definitely not what I expected when I read the title.

I like it. I never thought to make a sleeper out it. The idea makes me think of the Renault F1 Espace. A lot of cool things can be done with one of those vans.

No, but I am (and was when I joined GMI back when I owned a Safari) a member of Astrosafari.com. It looks like some of the old astrosafari people went over to that site. Wonder what happened.

I don't think anyone really knew what that term meant at the time. It's mini in that it isn't as large as the fullsize vans, but it certainly isn't small.

That is a bodykit only available in Japan (where they just about worship these vans). There's actually a larger custom Astro scene there than there is here

There is an importer of that companies products, but it's $$$. They usually import stuff for Mercedes and Audi and the like.

I have been thinking about getting some JDM stickers, though I'd probably replace the front signals with orange ones first, since that's how the export models came (and it's something different than the usual clear lens).

That would be interesting, though I don't know where you'd fit the turbo. Most people go the V8 route.

Hauled a couch across the state with it yesterday. The gf's dad was impressed. I told him, this van has never met a couch that didn't fit. So much useful space. I have been considering dumping the third row and fabricating some nice storage cabinets to fit in back. We'll see.

A few more well done JDM Astro Vans...I personally love them!
