    I Corralled the Commodores...

OK, they aren't actually Commodores, but corralling the Berlinas didn't sound as good. I usually wash them once a week. It has been illegal to wash cars at home for that last few years using tap water, so the grand I spent on a water tank has well and truly paid for itself - plus I hate commercial car washes.

I wash them on the front lawn behind the fence to water the lawn as well. Based on how the water wasn't beading well, I'm due a polish.

For those who don't know, the sedan is a 2002 Holden VY Berlina, 3.8Lt L36 V6, dual fuel (gasoline/LPG) with 17" Holden International wheels. The wagon is a 2003 Holden VY Berlina, 3.8Lt L36 V6, dual fuel (gasoline/LPG) with 17" Holden SV8 wheels. We've had the wagon since May 2004 and the sedan since December 2006. The wagon has done 190,000km and the sedan has done 170,000km. Only non-service items have been a battery each and a radiator in the wagon.

Is "your" L36 the same as the American L36? I was thinking Oz put DOHC heads on a 3800 block and called it the Alloytec

Nice pics of some great cars.

On a separate note, how long has it been illegal to wash cars at home using tap water, and how does the average Australian feel about that?

Based on what I know about engines (which is sweet FA) the specific engine was known as the LN3 Ecotech (according to Dr Terry's book). The Alloytech was a completely new motor released with the next model (VZ).

    Thanks Eric.

Water restrictions are the reason for car washing being illegal. We have been in drought for nearly 10 years - about time to stop calling it a drought and realise the climate has changed. In Melbourne, which has around 4 million people, our water storages have been below 40% for 2 years. The water restrictions we are under prevent garden watering except by hand from 6am to 8am two days a week, no car washing, no pool filling and a few other things. There is also a voluntary programme to limit water use to less than 155 litres (40 gallons) per person per day.

I have a 5000 litre (1300 gallon) bladder tank which I use to water the garden, wash the cars and fill the pool. As you can see, most of the plants are low water tolerant plants. We ripped out the roses and annuals last year and replaced it with a dry river bed look.

Sorry, in answer to the question about how we feel about it, it sucks, but having enough water to drink and bathe gets a priority.

The state government is just about to commission a water pipeline that takes water from a country farming area (who also don't have enough ) and are in the process of building a desalination plant to supply the city.

Is there a performance difference when running on LP?

Roses are fairly drought tolerant. They can put up with an awful lot and are a lot hardier than people give them credit for. To use an example - have you ever been to a disused farmhouse. usually the only flowers remaining are roses.

Yes there is but if the system is a good one and the car is kept well it is quite OK. The six cylinder Ford falcon wagon I am driving at the moment runs just a little rougher on LPG but that may be because it needs a tune up. At idle and low speeds I would have to look at the gauge to see which fuel I am using.
LPG is especially good for A to B type travel. When you want performance you change over to petrol. You also consume more fuel with LPG but it costs half as much as petrol. Typically in Melbourne you will pay AUD1.20 or so for a litre of petrol whereas LPG is around AUD0.50 (usually on the lower side).

Our household (three guys) use a bit over 80 litres a day. If the toilet didn't use drinking water (ie if it had a separate supply of re-cycled water) then you could cut that in half.

80 litres or 80 litres each ? If it's 80 litres, maybe I'll rethink that Melbourne GMI get together - you guys must stink

Or do you all shower at someone else's place...
