    Chase's 1984 Mercedes-Benz

So, a big difference between the 2003 MINI and the 1984 Mercedes Benz! I really love the W123 body style, especially the coupe, and when this one turned up last week, I just couldn't let it go. It was a grey import brought over to Baltimore in 1986 and was pretty much pampered its entire life.

It has a 2.3L I4 in it with a super rare (for the States) 4-speed manual tranny. The car (surprisingly) has quite a bit of get-up and go. No rocket mind you, but for having 162,000 Miles on it, it sure feels fantastic.

The previous owner had done all sorts of maintenance on it. My guess was that he took it in, they told him what was wrong, and he said "Fix It!". I have all of his old receipts.

Here are some preliminary pictures, some better ones will come when it isn't so damn bright outside.

Sure seemed like a steal at $3,700.00

LOVE IT. Just like my old 1985 300D (I miss that little car!) Though mine had leather inside, cloth is probably the better choice. I love that interior.

    Congrats

Classic Coupe styling, similar to my sister's SLC. The velour interior looks great, no wear for over 20 years of use!

    Best of drives!

That's a great looking vehicle Chase. I loooove pillarless doors and whole car looks beautiful. Good luck with this sweet little classic.

    Re: Chase's 1984 Mercedes-Benz

Thanks! I've been trolling through several w123 websites learning about the vehicles.

I think that the previous owner had a few issues with leaks around the sunroof because I have a sunroof cutout, I have the sunroof switch on my dash, but the sunroof is siliconed shut and pressing on the button does nothing. Something to poke around and explore.

The front seats upholstery, unfortunately, is not the original. Fronts are obviously a dark grey velour, but the backs (which I REALLY like) are a black, grey, and red woven pattern, like this blue example below:

I'd really like to purchase or find replacement covers in the same color/pattern. If push comes to shove I may re-do the interior, but am not sure if I want to put that much money into the car. Some of the vinyl wrapped areas are also peeling. Age and heat I'm guessing. Nothing the upholstery guy I know can't fix. Hell, I could probably do it with some contact cement.

The A/C also doesn't work, I never used it in my MINI so I don't really care, but my dad wants it fixed ASAP. I have a feeling that it is just because it needs a recharge and an R-12 conversion.

Other than those things, one of the window tracks needs a little greasing, and one of the door locks is slow to lock/won't lock with the remote so I am guessing there may be either a dirt issue or a vacuum leak. I can't wait to get my repair manuals so I can go about making this car absolutely perfect!

Don't do the conversion! My dad's car was converted and he actually just got it unconverted. The conversion caused more problems than it was worth.

I hope your door locks repair. My old 280SE had a problem and I didn't bother fixing them because Australia was the only RHD market with vacuum central locking as standard and the door handle assembly was AUD700. Gulp. That was just an exterior door handle with key/lock.
Your car looks to be a really good buy to me.

    Re: Chase's 1984 Mercedes-Benz

The Air conditioning system should be evaluated by a Radiator/AC shop for any repair or retrofit to R44. The interior is much easier, as the Mer Tex interiors have been available for Vinyl, and Leather for decades. Check your phone book for Auto Interior and inquire if they have sources for foreign makes, or get a referral from a German Auto Repair shop to an OEM supplier.

Let us know how you make out.

Don't get too excited, Paul...it's not the RuPaul kind of Drag Race.

And about the lock, sounds like the vacuum system. And when it gets really cold, a lot of times they will creep, so slow to open and slow to lock.
