    Another addition to the fleet...

So, much to the wife's chagrin, I came home with another "fun" car last week...

We're now the second owners of this 51k mile 1987 Pontiac Trans Am GTA. Only issue is bad coolant temperature sensor which causes it to idle too low when cold.

I had an '88 GTA that my family originally bought brand new in November 1987. I purchased it from my parents in the fall of '89 when they bought a 1990 Corvette. I put 80,000 miles on that car in 3 years before having to sell it to pay off the credit card debt that most 20-somethings get into at some point. I always missed the car and hoped to own another, but all of these years later, it's hard to find one that isn't beat to hell or $15-$20k. This one was in the sweet spot, condition and cost-wise, so we pulled the trigger.

We're going to leave this one stock and use it on the weekend, while taking it to the occasional car show (once we're allowed to have them again).

Sweet! I loved that gen of the Trans Am! One of the best looking cars on the road. Put some Van Halen in the tape deck and go for a cruise!

What's the hp on that? 225 hp or so? The 5.7 is what it came with, right?

Coolness! Loved the Firebirds and Trans Ams. I wanted a '68 Firebird 400 for the longest time.

I'm not sure I've ever seen one of these before.
It looks like a slightly larger knockoff of a Toyota Supra.
Amazing that the USA cannot create something iconic the first time around.

    Anyway, it looks fantastic.

It's an '87 with a 5.7, so the factory rating was 210 HP, but honestly, it feels about the same as my 230 HP '88 IROC was when it was stock (before the T56 and Holley Sniper conversion).

Wrong generation for that! I would love to have a second-gen with the screamin' chicken on the hood, but those have gotten really pricey.

Auto. I wouldn't have minded a 5-speed, but that was only paired with the 305 on all third-gens.

I'd love to get my hands on a '68, as well. Not many around in my neck of the woods, though there is one in the local FB Marketplace, but it's been tubbed and the interior gutted, with the owner asking $16k for it. Hard pass.

I like the color combo, as well, though I really wanted bright red, since the '88 from my youth was also that color. What I didn't realize was, that gunmetal grey was a relatively uncommon color, as there were only 837 GTA's built in that color in '87.

Not the point of the car.

And in its era, this car was not considered a "dog". Funny how people look past decades of automotive technological advancements and try to judge a 33 year-old car by today's standards.

I think Juche is just trying to live up to his name. Those cars were plenty quick for their day and still fun to flog around in.

That would be an absolute travesty if you swapped out the 5.7 for a higher hp engine. Maybe if it was a junker car with a shot engine then modify it. But yours is in beautiful shape, modifying it would be like trying to ad some paint to the Mona Lisa.
