    Atrocious Automotive Fads

Over the years there have been countless great ideas for customizing stock vehicles. Inevitably, there have also been some real losers. What modifications have you seen that have been horrible, dangerous, or just plain pathetic? I'll start it up with some Golden Oldies.

Rear shackles on 1960s and 70s 'performance' cars.

The idea here was to hike the rear of leaf spring equipped cars to ridiculous levels so you could install super wide wheels/tires without the hassles of wheel tub modifications. What you ended up with was a dangerously unstable vehicle due to the higher center of gravity at the rear and changed steering geometry on usually already worn out suspension components at the front. On the plus side, you were always driving downhill.

I rode in one of these cars. Once.

Cutting rear wheel openings with an acetylene torch.

More accomplished home stylists would sometimes freehand cut wheel openings to avoid the downfalls of shackles. All you needed was a steady hand and a good eye. Problems arose because a lot of these professionals weren't as adept at grinding or bodywork and just left the raw opening. I kid you not. Some did use spray can primer so at least their creations wouldn't rust. For a while.

The newest one I can think of is the Carolina squat. People take a normal pickup truck and only lower the rear. It's kind of how a pre-runner sits but it's not a pre-runner. Just horrible.

I was gonna mention big rig stacks on pickups so I'll agree. I also find overly loud exhaust on ANY vehicle aggravating. Sometimes it's best not to share. LED bars are bad but IMHO underbody LEDs are worse.

In the old days they at least had paint sticks for the letters on your tires. Dunno if they are still offered.Don't care either.

Only one I got to disagree with on here. LED light bars are a great product that have a great real purpose, but are abused by the pavement princesses that will never truly use them in the manner they were created for which gives the general public the wrong perception of them. Though I am not in the majority as I'm in the industry and actually use my lights like they were intended for, as most of my offroading out here is done at night. Not to mention the large market that is offroad night racing where it is an always evolving world to have the most powerful, furthest projecting light.

Ridiculously raised critters. Ridiculously lowered critters. Cars that dance and hop up and down. Super loud "look at me!" cars. That goes for bikes too, I'm talking to you Harley boys (mostly, a few mosquitoes buzzing around too).

As for stack pipes, I was going to do that to my Soul, along with a snorkel and periscope kit. It makes sense to me, soon the world will be flooded and we're all going to die!!!!!!!!!!

home made scoops, spoilers and wings on 20 year old Civics. Though the good thing is those messes slow the car down.

I forgot one that is seen a lot in the DC Metro area - a pale gold Toyota Camry with an aftermarket vinyl top. These are often seen on the Beltway weaving in the left lane @45 mph while the rest of traffic is doing 70 mph.

LED headlights. They're OK if you're inside looking out. For the other 98% of drivers, no, it's not fun getting blinded by excess light.

There are a lot of OEM ones that are getting obnoxious. I've noticed the new Escalade LED headlights are very annoying. Surprised there's not a standard for this.
