    My review: Mazda2

It was going to be the Ford Fiesta with its slick styling, spiffy electronics and heavy marketing that would be the new subcompact car to have for drivers who want something sporty.

The Fiesta is a fine automobile. It feels more substantial than a Honda Fit, and has a better balance of a smooth ride yet agile handling. But it doesn't really have an inherently fun character.

Enter the Mazda2, a more quietly styled little hatchback with a smaller engine yet lower fuel economy ratings than the Ford with which it shares its underpinnings...

Between the front seats and in the front doors.

Can you tell if the doors are locked?

It's interesting how different this is from the Fiesta - smaller engine, different trans. I'll be curious to see the difference in performance when crash tested - crash performance was one of the reasons given that our fiesta has a different front end than the Euro Fiesta, but the M2 doesn't seem to have been changed.

Sure can! The power locks button is still in the center, but it's a toggle and there are manual lock buttons as well.

The Mazda2 was face-lifted before it came stateside, so the NA and international versions all have the same look. Before, the front end looked like this:

If it's anything like the Mazda3 it'll be obnoxiously loud after a while. The 3 is infamous for interior noise; I'd expect this thing to be worse.
