My review: 2012 Mazda3 hatchback Skyactiv

Fuel economy didn't used to be Mazda's thing. The “zoom-zoom” automaker's has a full line of small, light products, but none was getting particularly good gas mileage.

Perhaps the worst performer for its class was the Mazda3 five-door hatchback with the manual transmission. Last redesigned for the 2010 model year, the hatchback was offered only with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated for a miserable 23 miles per gallon in mixed driving. This engine is big, and its six-speed manual is not geared for a relaxed highway cruise. Smooth shifting comes only when you drive the car hard.

You can still get that powertrain in the 2012 Mazda3, if you are so inclined. But Mazda has made two key changes recently that greatly broaden this car's appeal...

Huh, somehow it slipped under my radar they put the Skyactiv engine in the hatch. Makes the car more desirable in my eyes.
