    My review: 2012 Hyundai Veloster

If cars all drove the way they looked, there's little question the Hyundai Veloster would be a zippy little performance car. Small, light and low-slung, this new-for-2012 small hatchback is merely a set of oversized wheels away from a radical concept car.

Adding to that first impression is a base price of $17,300 – very well-equipped – and a promise of up to 40 miles per gallon on the highway. Put all this together, and the Veloster looks like it's become latest budget sporty car of choice, at least if your views on the styling lean more toward “love it” than “hate it.”

But at least for now, that's not what Hyundai built with this product...

Wow that color is a blast from the past. Gm used to make pickups in the 70's in that color.

I think the car needs the front facia of the turbo velocitor and the 204hp but it should be a fun little car.

I think I like the turbo version better than the mini cooper S!

BMW better watch out...mini could be in trouble..

What a horrid colour. Puke Yellow comes to mind.

As to the car, I've seen a few scooting about town. They look better in real life than in that picture. I find that true of a lot of the new Hyundais.

Everyone I know that's bought a Hyundai has done so because of price. They're supposedly very aggressively priced and discount regularly. I think Hyundai is the #1 car brand in Canada now.

This car does look good in person. Wish it had taken a less of practicality hit on the hatch. Still looks like a great car. Wish you did not have to get the 40 sidewall 18s to get either the tech or other package.

I quite like the color, it stands out in the sea of beige, silver, gray, black and white. I've never heard of "puke yellow" as puke is stereotypically green.

As for the car for me the front 3/4 is the best angle, from the side and rear angles it doesn't look too hot.

Re: My review: 2012 Hyundai Veloster

Thanks for the interesting review, Brady.

I saw one of these in a beautiful blue a couple of weeks ago, a couple of blocks away in a neighbor's drive.

As I started to read your report, I thought of the Fiat 500 thread from which I just departed.
I was thinking, this is what Fiat should have done with the 500.

Slap a Fiat badge on this puppy and maybe they'll get their 4,000/month sales. Of course, Hyundai has a dealer network, and Fiat has a copy of Renault circa 1964 network... Or Suzuki 2011.

H might consider putting the 148 HP 2.0 liter in this car. It would probably get as-good (or nearly) mileage as the 1.6, and it will have a bit more brio`, as the car mags used to say.
HOWEVER, that said, our Spectra has a 138HP 136TQ 2.0, weighs 2900 wet, has a 4-speed auto, and it has enough punch for my purposes. Yes, 20 more HP is always welcome, but keeping your tactical driving skills up to date is a positive side-effect of non-hypo performance. You don't have to have blistering quickness to have a fun driver.

And as Hitman notes, not everyone is enamored of the 18" plus wheel trend. My personal limit is 17 for anything under 4500 lbs.

Cheap, zippy, stylish, off-the-grid color choices, 5/60 & 10/100 warranty...sayonara, Fiat 500. Here, have some dust!

Re: My review: 2012 Hyundai Veloster

This is a strange, peculiar little car. I really want to see it in person before I pass my final judgment on it, but from what I've seen of it in reviews and in pictures. I think it's pretty neat. And there is certainly nothing else like it; it's got several features that appear to have been taken straight out of AMC's think tank.

It's definitely a wild card, that's for sure. Also, I love that shade of yellow.
