    My review: 2011 Mazda2

Horsepower barely into the triple digits. A five-speed manual transmission. A hatchback body style. An affordable base price. A curb weight below 2,400 pounds. I have been over into the past, and it works.

In an era in which attention-seeking fuel-efficient cars need pricey hybrid or diesel technology, nothing can be enjoyable to drive that lacks once-unfathomable levels of acceleration, and anything that doesn't boast luxury features is written off as junk, the 2011 Mazda2 is something of an anachronism.

But after spending a week with the Autos Examiner, this subcompact demonstrated that simplicity still has its place. Combining acceptable pep and interior space with delightful steering and handling, the Mazda2 cheerfully ate up city streets, back roads and freeways at a rate of an observed 39.9 miles per gallon...

For the sake of comparison, did you ever end up getting an opportunity to test out the Fiesta hatchback?

Yeah, before the Mazda2 came out:

Basically, the impression it left me with was competence but not great fun. The Mazda2, which I first drove maybe a month later than that Fiesta, is fun.

Interesting... it's almost as if the Mazda2 under-promised and over-delivered in many respects while the advance buzz on the Fiesta made it tough for it to live up to the expectations.

Any idea when you will be evaluating the Focus?

That's definitely a big part of it. The other thing is simply that, actually living up to its reputation and marketing, Mazda made the most fun to drive car in its class.

I'll drive it when I find one at a dealer. I think it's due in just a few weeks now.

Media outlets are apparently receiving their evals next week, with general delivery sometime in March.

Unfortunately, you have to be 25 to drive a Ford press car. I'm 21. So I'll just be getting my drive at the dealership.

I had heard it was February, but maybe it's been pushed back.

Sounds like my 1992/1994 Proteges, though they had 1.6 & 1.8 mills.
Weight about the same, MPG not as good, but fun, fine, and sporty cars nonetheless.

It comes from a Japanese manufacturer. It will surely be a hit with the Asian-centric media regardless...
