Driving this for a week, a non-turbo EX. Any particular questions to be looking for?

They should have left off the 'ventiports'. They don't add anything, the only clutter what is otherwise a clean side profile.

I actually like the side vents...

It's a family car and is there something wrong for a family car to have a manual? It's bad enough manual drivers have to settle for the weak engines. You want to push them out altogether? Why don't you think it that kind of car and what kind of car do you think should have manual if any at all?

I'd like to see all vehicles offer a manual, but realistically they make the most sense in enthusiast vehicles. No manual in an Optima is fine because its an appliance car, not exactly an enthusiast machine. No manual in a Charger R/T is inexcusable.

They market the Optima as a sporty family car. I don't think the Optima is marketed as an appliance I mean. Otherwise we wouldn't give them a thought. The old Kias were appliances. The Optima isn't meant to be seen that way unlike the Camry and Accord imo. I like the fact the Charger R/T doesn't have a manual.

Isn't the base offered with a stick?
Manual sales are about 5% of the market now. It's not worthwhile to do the engineering and production for near-zero sales.

I believe Camry and Corolla base models are offered with sticks, as are Civic and Accord.

Automatics, just a fact of modern life like junk 10% E gas, for better or worse.

Optima gets good write-ups, sounds like a good car. Will be interested to see your report.

Well, I think this is the kind of car that 'shouldn't' have a manual...just as much as I have to read numerous posts everytime a sports car comes out where people say "that is the type of car that shouldn't have an automatic."

Personally, I'd be ok with any car having any kind (preferably both kinds) of transmissions....but some people think family cars should only be automatics (mistakenly), just as many 'manual only elitists' like to think any 'sporty' car should only be a manual.

The base Optima has an available manual on the LX, but not on the EX. This is the six-speed automatic, and there's still lots of pep.

With any luck, I'll be able to find a manual to test-drive at a dealership, but either way I'll be driving some sort of LX -- for this deal: http://2011optimatestdriveoffer.cloudapp.net/

I know this and it supports my point that if appliances such as the Camry and Accord have manuals at least for their four-cylinder models. Then there is no excuse that the Optima which is marketed as a sportier sedan at the very least shouldn't have a manual. The turbo has no manual and that's far enough. I'm sure there are some turbo settle for the 2.4. 200hp with a proper gearbox is a nice combo for about 19 grand IIRC.

I'm not saying it would be "bad" if it had a manual available. I like a vehicle having as many options as possible to attract the widest audience possible. However, this is not the type of car that I'd be surprised, shocked or upset with had it not been available with a manual transmission.

Yes, it's "sporty" - but it's supposed to be more luxurious than sporty. The Cadillac DTS is luxurious and "sporty" and I'd never "expect" one to be sold with a manual transmission.

DTS sporty? That was a good laugh but really I just don't see the sporty feel in the DTS just my opinion here. If you compare the two cars when it comes to their respective classes. The Optima is consider a lot more sporty compared to its competitors than the DTS is to its competitors. I expected Optima turbo to have a manual because iirc it has the same 2.0 engine from the Gen Coupe and it has one.
