Will the Malibu "mild" Hybrid get stuck with a 4-speed Transmission?

I've been looking for press releases or something and I can't find it.

My friend read about the hybrid and would prefer to buy domestic, but he won't consider it if it has a "fuel economy robbing 4-speed".

It will most likely get the new 6 speed but the 4 speed is possible give the low cost of the tranny. It depends on how much of a premium they will charge for the hybrid system.

Tell him that the current Malibu has best-in-class mileage for a V6.

But the hybrid uses the Ecotec, I at least remember that.

I don't remember hearing that the Malibu got particularly bad mileage even with the 4 cylinder.

Is aiming for better performance not too much to ask? Hybrid buyers apparently care about a 4-speed transmission, or my friend wouldn't have asked. Cost should be a factor, but if GM can't at least get a trans with more gears by 2007 in its bread and butter vehicles, I hope he ends up getting a Toyota or whatever because it will serve GM right.

GM could save some real bucks by bringing back the Powerglide.

I wonder why no one's thought of that yet, I mean, you only need two gears anyway
