Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

GM has a 2.4L Ecotec. The supercharged version in the Solstice prototype made 240HP. So why does the Cobalt have a supercharged 2.0L making 205HP? Does the Cobalt have a weak drivetrine? Or did GM cheap out again?

The 2.0 was ready to be used, it had forged pistons and crankshaft. I guess insurance had something to do here as well.
Sorry China, we'll buy your disposable electronics and lead coated toys, but when we Americans want a cheap car with horrible quality, we get a Chrysler.

The Malibu SS makes 240, which wouldn't be right. And, no GM, didn't cheap out, RARELY do concept cars bring an 'exotic' drivetrain with them to production. Like a 240HP engine in a lightweight car. The Lotus Elise doesn't even make 200!

Re: Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

I don't think it's because of insurance, Dodge's STR-4 turbo 2.4 makes 230HP and they don't seem to have any trouble selling them.

Not giving the Cobalt a 240HP engine because it would make the Malibu SS look bad sounds like typical GM stupidity. The Cobalt isn't a lightweight car it weighs 3000 lbs. A supercharged 2.4 making 240HP is not "exotic" the naturally aspirating 2.1 in the Honda S2000 makes 240HP.

About the "a smaller liter means better compression" it's a supercharged engine it doesn't need to turn 7800RPMs(the Honda does) to make power. As a mater of fact the 2.0 redlines at 6500RPMs.

Re: Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

    the Cobalt SS weights 2900lbs.
The 2.0 SC motor is out now, while the 2.4 has yet to start up production, that would be a BIG part of why there is no turbo or supercharged 2.4 Ecotec.

The 2.0 motor is built in Europe where they make engines designed for boosted applications.

If all goes well in the halls of GM powertrain, there will be a turbo 2.0 or bigger coming in the future, but right now the "weak" 205 hp Cobalt SS can keep up and beat out the stronger SRT4 Neon as shown in MT's road test.

Re: Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

The 2.0L Ecotec has been widely used as a turbo engine in Europe, I believe. The cost, reliability, and off the line performance of a supercharger seemed to be the ticket for the SS Supercharged. But I'd bet a turbo is coming eventually.

A smaller liter has nothing to do with compression ratio. If the smaller cubic in. 2.0 vs 2.4 is created from a smaller bore size and not stroke size I would guess that GM went with the 2.0 to get thicker cylinder walls for boosted applications.

You can make any engine have strong enough internals (forged) but if GM felt the additional bore thickness would give the 2.0 more strength I can see them doing it to avoid warrenties and "weak" engine rumors on their much coveted first real import performer.

Obviously this would only apply if the smaller engine size is created from a smaller bore size to create thicker cylinder walls. Right now I'm not sure if that is the case or not. It could also leave room for growth for future models with not much of a cas outlay.

Re: Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

In the other thread about the Cobalt (Cobalt SS vs RSX-S) I did point out, and others had also seen, the recent dynos of the Cobalt SS supercharged putting like 217hp to the wheels. If this is true (i've seen the dyno sheet, a member on s2ki.com posted it, so i dont have reason to doubt it) then the Cobalt SS Supercharged is actually putting out closer to 255hp at the crank, not bad for a 2900 lbs car.

Re: Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

The 2.0L engine also can handle a lot more than a 2.2L engine and the 2.4L engine just hasn't had enough time for it to slap FI on it yet. The 2.0L can handle up to 1000hp. Not so weak anymore? IS it? lol

A liter is a liter is a liter. They're all the same size, just like quarts.

I think that GM maybe thinking of getting into the WRC. All they need is to up the HP and add AWD. I for one would like to see a Cobalt rally car.

Re: Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

According to Chevy’s website the supercharged SS Cobalt weighs 2991 lbs
    SRT-4 2970 lbs
    RSX Type-S 2840 lbs
    Celica GT-S 2500 lbs
The 05 Cavalier weighs 240 lbs less then the Cobalt. The Cobalt is not a light car.

    BigAls87Z28
About the 2.4 not being in production yet, I thought there was going to be a naturally aspirating 2.4 version of the SS or does that not come out till 06'?
I haven’t read the MT road test I don’t have a subscription. But I have read what people have said about it. That the Cobalt was faster in the slalom and as fast in the 1/4 mile, but everything else I’ve read says that the Cobalt is slower in the 1/4 mile. What time did the SRT-4 run?

    Cphelps
My guess is that it’s an overly optimistic dynos. If it has that much HP shouldn’t it be beating the SRT-4 not just keeping up? What would GM gain by under rating it?

I know about engine. The question was about transmission and driveshafts.

I was looking at the 21,995$ SS specs and it doesn't come standard with a limited-slip diff it's a 1,500$ option WTF? It's standard equipment on the 21,195 SRT-4.

Re: Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

I know for a fact GM is under-rating the Cobalt SS @ 205 HP because I've had several ION Redlines on a chassis dyno that did 215HP + to the wheels stock. This wasn't just one car that did that but four of them. Besides GM under-rated the LS-1 Z28's at 305HP. What makes you think that they wouldn't do it again?

Re: Why does the SS Cobalt have 2.0L engine?

There is going to be a N/A 2.4, but its is not out yet.
The SRT4 and the Cobalt SS ran the same 14.3, only teh SRT4 ran 1 mph faster.
As for the 1500 option, you also get SS specific Recaros. The SRT4 didnt have LSD standard till this year.
While the Cobalt isnt a light car, it also packs a lot more nicer things and has bette build quality then cars of its class. Lord knows how much sound dedding they stuffed in that double walled firewall.
The Cobalt SS is still a better overall car giving both awesome handling and strait line performance, on top of a quality car.
