What are specifics of 3.9L (240hp) engine

I'm looking at getting a car later this year and after looking at GM's web site the Malibu SS has my attention. Is the 3.9L motor new or variation of 3.5 or even the 3.8L. Is it a 60 degree? Does it have DOD? Enquiring minds want to know.

    thanks,

    thanks,
60° V6 DOD with VVT. It should be quite the little motor.

Re: What are specifics of 3.9L (240hp) engine

It is based off of the 3500, which is the evolution of the 3400 engine, that traces its roots back to the 3100 and 2.8L engines. It is not related to the 3800, but will match the horsepower of the 3800 supercharged version. I don't know about DOD, but it would probably be an option.

The fun of the Malibu and Maxx SS models undoubtedly begins with the 3900 V-6 that creates 240-hp at 5,800 rpm and 245 lb-ft of torque at 2,800 rpm, though 90 percent of that torque is on tap from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm.

This engine is a production variant of GM Powertrain's new 60-degree V-6 OHV engine family, which Dewar says is ''designed to deliver smoothness and quality while balancing strong performance and economy.''

The large displacement of the 3900 V-6 is achieved with 99-mm offset bores and an 84-mm stroke and combines with torque-enhancing technologies such as active air intake to produce a broad, flat torque curve that ''translates into exceptional all-around performance and terrific off-the-line launch feel.''

Dewar says the variable-valve timing bolsters performance, enhances economy and reduces emissions, and an electronically-controlled cam phaser provides for infinitely variable adjustment of camshaft timing in relation to the crankshaft. ''By electronically controlling the camshaft,'' he explains, ''the optimum location can be selected for various engine operating conditions, maximizing torque and horsepower outputs.''

There's no DOD. DOD and 3 valves/cylinder will eventually come, probably in 2 more years.

Are you sure, I have heard conflicting information on this one...VVT, DOD, or both.

Yup, like others just said. VVT is on this, but 3v/cylinder and DOD will eventually follow.

    Actually it doesn't have 245 LB-FT TORQUE

Pontiac.com has these numbers on the 2006 G6
    240 HP @ 6000 RPM
    241 LB-FT TORQUE @ 2800 RPM

The 3500 also has revised numbers:
    201 HP @ 5600 RPM
    222 LB-FT TORQUE @ 3200 RPM

Honestly I would prefer the G6 have the 210 HP variant of the 3500 found in the monte carlo/impala

I miss the old 3.4 DOHC, GM had that motor producing 275-280hp fwd f-body camaro test mules. Too bad that never made it into the Grand Prix GTP, or Monte Carlo SS.

I thought I was the only one excited about the new 3900. The only bad part is that there is virtually no aftermarket for ANY 60degree GM motor.

Holy crap! 3.9L and only 240 hp/241 lb-ft? This is about as high tech as those NASCAR engines!

Then it looks as if 1- the Maxx is getting more torque thenthe GTP, or 2- GM needs to redo Pontiac.com and update the power ratings.
