I like the darker grill also since it blends in with the lower opening better. In fact I wouldn't mind seeing the first picture with the the chrome trim changed to body color.
You forgot to take the other two doors off while you were at it.
I don't mind the idea of doing the honeycomb part of the grille in chrome, because I think it works beautifully on the current model, but I think that the lines need to stay a thin as they are in the original. Your photoshop version has those lines being thicker and it doesn't quite look right to me. It becomes to overpowering to the front end of the car. Just my artistic opinion of course.
Not a lot of subtlety in the Chevy grille, IMO. Perhaps the way the German brands keep looking for manners to adapt their trademark grilles may work as an inspiration to GM.
I think the first one looks the best with the darker mesh grill.
I think on the last one instead of making the mesh grill the red body color make the trim the body color and keep the darker mesh grill insert of the first pic.
