Popular Mechanics Gets 37 mpg from a Corvette

This has been posted for a while, but I just came across it. PopMech wanted to see what kind of fuel economy was possible from a C7 Corvette. So, they took a 55 mph cruise in Eco mode and averaged over 37 mpg over 124 miles. Pretty impressive for a car as capable as the Corvette!

Probably could've done better at a higher speed. That 0.48:1 OD ratio on 3.42's would've done better if they went to 65-70mph. I know it'll take more power, but the engine would be producing better BSFC at 1350-1450rpms than at 1100rpms. (1100 rpms ÷ 0.48:1 OD ratio ÷ 3.42 on 285/30R20 - manual so no trans slip= 55mph).

The fact that the new LT1 can move ~3500lbs along at 55mph with only 1100rpms smoothly, without bucking and going nuts, is a feat to GM's engineering! My LT1 couldn't do that stock, neither could the LS1.

What ever happened to accuracy in reporting? Come on Popular Mechanics! The Z51 got 0.48:1 7th gear, not the base Stingray's 0.42:1 ratio.

Re: Popular Mechanics Gets 37 mpg from a Corvette

I recently took a trip in our '14 auto Z51 & on a near 100% highway tank it went 505 miles on 18 gals for 28.0mpg. The crazy part is almost all of it was w/the cruise set at 82, I did occasionally have to pass some vehicles, & occasionally there were backups slowing everybody to near zero.
If I'm not 'in it' I'm in eco mode trying to save gas, & it's rewarding that behavior. It's one of the reasons I bought the car & not a Denali or something (I was looking at Denalis tho).
