Kill The Cruze, Keep The Sonic?? The Reason May Be The Chevy Bolt.

Wikipedia may give us the answer to why the Sonic survived the GM cuts, but the Cruze did not.

The Chevrolet Bolt may have saved the Sonic:

Orion Assembly is a 4,300,000 square foot (400,000 m2) General Motors vehicle assembly plant located in Orion Township, Michigan. The plant currently assembles the Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Bolt and Opel Ampera-e. As of November 2016, the plant has 143 salaried employees and 1,005 hourly employees.

If GM stops production of the Cruze, no doubt Sonic sales will increase (think fleet at least). Combined with increasing Bolt sales, the Orion plant should then be in good shape.

No possibility of Voltec Trax/Encore/Sonic (all on same platform)? Does death of Volt mean death of Voltec? Or does GM really think people like me who buy Sonics will suddenly fork over $35K for a Bolt?? It ain't gonna happen. Glad they chose to keep the Sonic.

Assuming you live in New York, you can get tax incentives in the amount of $9,500 if you purchase or lease by 03-31-2019.

I would definitely consider a $25K Volt (after subsidies) over a similar Malibu or loaded Cruze. But Sonic/Fit/Yaris/Accent/Elantra are more in the $15K range so...

There's a bunch of things they could do to take what is IMO basically a terrific small car and keep it competitive with the Japanese/Koreans. Maybe they'll put some $$ into it now that Cruze and Impala are going away...hey I can dream!

The seating position is better in the Bolt, but I have ZERO interest in a pure EV.

I am the only one that doesn't see how all the puzzle-pieces fit together?...

Action and Thoughts coming out of GM:

    1) Downturn is coming, so we need to prepare now.
    2) Massive cuts in lower purchase-cost cars, more focus going to higher-cost CUV's and EV's
    3) Spending gobs on PURE EV and Autonomous, at the heels of self-proclaimed downturn; both with higher costs, and thus lower margins.

For years, I've been saying GM needed more volume for the plants they had open, year after year nothing, re-designing and/or refreshing every sedan in the lineup, so as to charge higher prices, was the answer, now they are going in the exact opposite direction. How are they sure "this time" they are going the right way?

The lights were on, but it was as if, nobody was working in the China Shop; now they tie red towels all over the store and release a raging bull inside.

    I'm flabbergasted.

Sonic won't stay long, but the plant will likely get new product centered around their electrification strategy.

Then Honda or Toyota or Hyundai will get my $$ not GM. Of course I've already given up on Ford/FCA.

GM is basically saying there's a recession coming. Does it then make sense to drop the cheaper cars from the lineup (versus bloated crossover/truck prices) just before it hits? If they're right, suddenly a $20K Cruze will start looking pretty good compared to a $30K crossover. So yes they're wrong. But Ford is wrong-er for dropping everything below $20K (Fiesta/Focus). At least GM is keeping the Spark/Sonic. IMO.

Cheaper cars aren't going to save them in a recession, they don't make money under any circumstance. They need to get their capacity and products to the right size to withstand a downturn, and GM is particularly bloated right now with an abundance of slow selling cars.

Besides, Chevy has two new entry-level utilities arriving in the next 12 months.

People won't buy the cheaper car. They won't buy any car.

I'm sure the 49K customers who bought Camrys and Corollas just in October would be very interested to learn that. Unquestionably, sedan/hatch sales are down...but not out.

GM really infuriates me at times. The workers at SUV/CUV plants should frigging strike!

I find it sad that some people wish for GM to fail and can't comprehend any good news. A plausible explanation for this kind of behavior is that you have a miserable life so you wish the same to others. Cory Pham, Autoblog Poster

GM must return its divisions to being interdependent entities within the corporation. Decentralize and free the different divisions talents to foster brand differentiation and customer loyalty.

It is kind of an odd decision, perhaps solely because of convenience, to keep the Sonic around. My local dealerships stock maybe 1 or 2 at a time. They have more Cruzes on the lot.
