    Just bought an 09 Impala

Hi guys (and ladies lol) so I just bought an 09 Impala LT black, it's got the flexfuel 3500 V6. It has 96000 miles. Are there any issues, common problem areas, or just general concerns I should be looking out for? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Just bought an 09 Impala

    Congratulations!!

I have a 2009 Impala LS with 3500 V6 - not Flex Fuel. With about 32,000 miles the big things to watch out for are the lower intake manifold gasket leak, the power steering rack failing, and the lower door sills rust prematurely because the drain holes in the bottoms of the doors get clogged with junk such as leaves, etc. Otherwise, solid running car, very comfortable, and very affordable to own.

    Enjoy!!!

Thanks everyone! Pics will be forthcoming as soon as I upload them onto my computer. I'll take you up on that Don Mateo! Does the power steering rack failure have any warning associated with it or does it just go out all of the sudden? Also, what kind of issues should I look out for with the transmission? So far it's a solid, smooth riding car with MUCH, MUCH better brakes than I remember. (An aunt of mine had a 2000 and one of my uncles rented a 2010 back in the day that I drove.)

The power steering rack will start to whine / growl when turning as it starts to fail. It's pretty noticeable, and random. My trusted mechanic warned me about it when I purchased the car 3 years ago, and he was right.

None of those faults are certain. Tens of thousands have run close to 200k without trans or steering gear failures, and the intake gaskets failures pretty much ended in '05. ALL V type engines with wet intake manifolds have had and will forever have a few intake gasket failures. They always have had. Think that had anything to do with the design of the LS V8's? But once the gaskets on the 3.1 and 3.4 were changed they've been trouble free to the point that the parts folks have had to radically reduce their stock of these parts. I've never seen a 3.5 or 3.9 with leaking gaskets, but don't doubt some exist. Just not common. I think it's interesting that when the Chevy V8 finally was clean sheet redesigned they went back to an old idea, a water manifold that wasn't part of the intake. Thanks Studebaker and Packard.

The gaskets that go bad and leak coolant are the crossover pipe gaskets. This is a cast aluminum housing that connects the heads on the right side of the engine below the intake manifold.
