    Future Pipeline - Chevrolet SS

    Future Automotive Products: Chevrolet SS
    Automotive News - Pipeline

The future of the large, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan is in question as GM shuts its Australia manufacturing operations. The 2017MY could very well be its last hurrah. Until then, rumors out of Australia point toward next year’s SS coming with a 6.2-liter LSA supercharged V-8 engine tuned approximately like earlier Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CTS-V models. There’s no official word from Chevrolet about the future plans of the SS nameplate, but rumors point to the possibility of a replacement being built off of GM’s Alpha platform, which underpins the Camaro and Cadillac ATS.

AN has been pretty accurate over the last few years in their future model predictions.

If there is an SS (and Holden) rwd sedan replacement in the works, it seems like there may be a few years gap between the models.

I'll honestly be surprised if I see it come to pass, at least in a form similar to the current car with a big V8 and RWD. I can't see the business case with sales being what they are (and yes I'm aware that was partly by design). I had always thought the more likely path for a semi-budget sport sedan successor was a Buick version of the CTS Vsport, maybe reviving the GN name.

I say this as a person who plunked down a deposit on a '16 SS at 20% discount, that's now in limbo since GM issued a recall last week...

Another Alpha car, if at first you don't succeed, try again, and again, and again, and.....

But seriously, the SS doesn't sell in numbers that make sense as it stands now backed by Aussie sales, it's not likely to sell well going forward while exporting even fewer to Aussie than they build there now. If GM won't build the Avista I don't see any reason to believe the slow selling SS is any kind of priority.

Not going to hold my breath. If they do, hopefully it at least looks cool. Ooooorrrrr... they can actually build the car that set the car world on fire, the Avista... I know I'd leave a deposit. But then again, GM just loves to tease us.

I agree, there's probably going to be a year or two gap. A key factor will be the impala. If there isn't a major overhaul planned for 2018 then it's a good chance the SS will live on with the impala nameplate. Giving the Cruze and Malibu the much needed breathing room.

I seriously thought about looking for one when Chevy had that promotion. But, I'm in the market for a house, so a new vehicle gets put on the back burner.

The 20% off sale makes me wish I needed a car, I'm one of the (apparently few) who thinks the SS is GORGEOUS. I'd probably be able to negotiate some more off as I like the weird colors, and could be talked into settling for an automatic.

But I just bought a 2000 740i sport with a bad trans for $1,500, rebuilding the trans in my garage in my spare time. No match for an SS, but then neither was the price...

Probably won't see any non-Cadillacs on Omega til after 2020 and the super secret RWD program sounds like it's coming or maybe was said to be coming ~2018/pre-2020, so that kind of cancels out what I'd imagine the replacement would be (Impala-SS merger on Omega).

Wouldn't be shocked to see CTS repurposed (and re-skinned) as another SS for that the secret RWD project. Otherwise I would suspect a RHD Camaro or Holden equivalent (Avista) to help amortize Camaro's flop in the interim while this Impala drags on a while longer until SS and Impala are merged into a replacement on Omega after 2020.

Could be both, Holden's Camaro could stick around, could even see another Holden CTS alongside Omega.

IMO CTS and Omega are most likely given GM's new 10 year life plan for their platforms.

You know seeing it in person, the whole "looks like a Malibu" is so overblown. It has enough nice touches, vents and fender flares to be aggressive enough without being boy racerish. The back, which is the common source of boring complaints, can't be confused with a Malibu/Impala, with the black lower valence as well as the now quad tips poking out.

Ideal family sedan for me. My GS is about 85% of what the SS is, in regards to being a drivers car, with the glaring deficiencies being power and FWD. What's amusing to me is the sticker on my '12 was $38.1 (not that I paid that) and 4 years later at the 20% deal the sale price of the SS would be $39.4.

Anyways enough rambling and nuthugging of the SS...just a bit longing since my plans got messed up and it will probably fall through for now.

I wouldn't rule out Omega. PPV and Impala will need a long wheel bas, though not as long as the CT6.

Unless they sell it under Opel and Chevrolet across the world. Remember the Middle East loves the Caprice. There is enough Volume around the world to sell the car, the problem is can anyone ever get GM North America to make a right hand drive car?
