Did Chevrolet Make a Mistake by Not Launching the SS with the LT1?

The Chevrolet SS sedan was launched amidst much fanfare at NASCAR events, and priced competitively against Chrysler's SRT products, it will have a built-in audience of those that were fans of the Pontiac G8, as well as '94-'96 Impala SS owners. But for some, having then Gen-IV LS3 under the hood at launch at the same time the LT1 was launching in the C7 Corvette, and the fifth-gen V-8 was coming out in the pickups seems like a retrograde move.

It may be a supply issue, and being a low-volume car, it wasn't a priority to ship LT1s to Australia for the car. But with the Chrysler SRT cars producing substantially more power (granted, they're substantially heavier, as well), did GM make a mistake in not launching the car with the LT1? How soon do you think it will be until the LT1 is offered in the SS?

Well it would likely have comparable power to the SRT8 Charger, and have much better fuel economy.

So yes. Holden was usually first to get new stuff, with Gen IV launching in VZ and they got the 6L80 not long after the STS-V as well.

I don't think most people care. Plus, it's a limited production car.

It will make the anti-AFM people out there happy right?
"The car's brilliant and ... a great surprise, pleasant surprise for all Corvette lovers everywhere ... a huge shock to our competitors ... because I don't think anybody was expecting something that good. What pleases me the most about it was that ... I can say this is the first car that's come out, that was done since I left.

yes its a mistake, it should have the LT1....maybe they did not want to steal the Vettes thunder, but I think having 460hp, sounds much better for 45k, then 415hp, plust it will make it compete better witht he SRT8.

I don't think it will matter, either. I think it'd be safe to say GM is testing the waters to see if it'll be worth a second-gen SS sedan with the Gen V. Otherwise, I think we'd see the 5th gen getting a Gen V before the end of its run. Further, they'd have to invest even more money into this car which is to be a niche vehicle. Essentially, it's a 4 door Camaro.

Pretty sure VF was never even developed with LT1 in mind, so...

Yeah, the LT1 can't go in Zeta vehicles. Considering Zeta is on the way out, don't think they will spend the money to reengineer the platform to fit it.

Though I'm amazed they reengineered the W-Body to fit the 3.6 and 6 speed auto when the W-Body was on its way out.....

Don't go injecting facts into a potential complain fest related to anything related to Zeta.

I'm sure this is a rule on NSAP's GMI etiquette thread.

I think its fine. It would have been a big mistake if the Camaro were swapping out the L99 & LS3 for the LT1.

When the SS' replacement comes in then it'll use the TTV6 or the LT1

Heck I think they screwed up by not making the PPV a civilian Caprice years ago.
In a way I think it's pathetic that the "SS" only has color as its major option.

The LS3 is a perfectly good engine for a low-risk niche vehicle that may or may not succeed. If GM were more invested in the SS, it would have the LT1, an 8 speed auto, design more in tune with USA tastes. Maybe next generation if there is one.
