Chevy Bolt Achieves 300+ Miles on a Single Charge

Out of the 300 miles, about 100 miles of freeway with an average freeway speed of 60 mph. No climate control usage.

    Not bad.

60 MPH on the freeway is bad enough, but without climate control!?

And people get all sideways when we waterboard terrorists, sheesh!

    --------------------------

300 shouldn't be surprising, in perfect conditions, the Volt easily gets 30% higher than rating.

I read some cold weather Bolt owners are getting 150'ish miles per charge.

Awesome! Now all they have to do is make it look aspirational, instead of a penalty box.

Ahh, I remember the days when I used to get 300 miles of range from my Chevy Bolt, I drove it to school downhill with a tail wind both ways, those were the days!

300 miles is sandbagging at its worst.

Rockwell Automation has done extensive research in electric motor design.
When properly configured, the Bolt motor only draws 185 milliwatts at full acceleration.
The non-reversible tremi pipe is the key to getting thousands of miles range from the Bolt.

Tesla quotes 350 mile range for the model X with 100kwh pack - a magazine test of constant motorway cruising at 70mph gave a real range under 200, and then takes an hour to recharge at a supercharge point, longer at conventional points - that would be down to 120 miles with a 60 kwh pack.

The range of "ranges" is considerable with EVs. Increase the speed from 60 to a realistic 70 MPH and reduce the temperature to, say, 25 deg F (which is more typical of the northern U.S. in winter where the cabin needs to be heated), and the Bolt's range would be well below 200 miles I'd think. Increase the speed just a bit more and decrease the temperature closer to zero (which frequently occurs around here), and the 238-mile rating would seem absurd.

Every single PHEV and EV produced today will see significant drops in efficiency the minute anyone in the car demands comfort in the winter or summer. And the worst part is, you pay dearly for that discomfort. No thanks, I like my comfort. Don't believe the marketing hype.

Well, presuming equivalent weight and drag.

I think one of the biggest challenges with electric vehicles moving mainstream is going to be the heroic variation of actual range is based on driving styles, climates, topography, traffic, etc. I'm not sure the average Joe or Nigel will be as tolerant as the people who seek out this niche currently, even with education. I agree with you, but as long as people understand what they are getting themselves into I can't fault them for wanting these still. But how many will still want, and how many avg Joes will fully understand the compromise is what I wonder.

Technically the bolts awesome...too bad about it's bland but not offensive styling. I couldn't drive one......GM needs to put awd and a sexy Porsche Macon body on one for GMC or Cadillac...sell it at 55 grand which is a sweet spot today..

I got as low as 18 and as high as +50 on my 2014 Volt.

I think a reliable, entertaining 270-300 mile range vehicle will be on the market for less than $60,000 within 5 years.

The question is if that car will be built by General Motors, Tesla, or someone else.

If it's a GM, it'll be a novelty at best; the "key" to EV's is fast charge; the ability AND accessibility of places to do it.

Plugging an EV into the side of the Hampton Inn, with the portable charger and getting a full charge in 30 or 40 hours isn't going to cut it.................

I assume the 350 miles is from the well-known-to-be-unrealistically-optimistic European ratings. No Model X is rated more than 295 miles in the US. That said, the under 200 miles the magazine got suggests some very aggressive or up-hill driving or cold weather (or some combination). The Model X also suffers from worse aerodynamics than a sedan. It's better than most conventional SUVs but there's no way around the greater front surface of an SUV and mileage drops off quickly over 65mph or so. This is going to be a challenge for EV SUVs in general.
