    Chevrolet V8 Beretta/Feretta

I found an article that talked about the V8 Beretta/Feretta, and it says it used a 3.5L engine. Was this a one-off engine or based on something else? Though they do talk that there might have been a Suzuki/Japanese connection.

I'm also thinking - Could this engine have been an outgrowth of the cancelled GM80 program?

This is an interesting quote in the article "GM management was seriously considering replacing the F-body Camaro with variations of the L-body Beretta"

Does this imply that when the GM80 program was cancelled that the Beretta was actually a variation of what the 3rd-gen Camaro would have looked like?

    Re: Chevrolet V8 Beretta/Feretta

    According to this article:

"Under the heat-extracting louvered hood sits an Isuzu-built, 32 valve all-aluminum V-8 relaying power through a five-speed manual transmission, to the front wheels (not the rears or all four, even though sometimes erroneously reported as such). Although I was unable to positively determine the motor’s displacement, it is reportedly “around 3.5 liters.” According to an interview, by Hot Rod Magazine of an unnamed GM employee, the Feretta was an idea they were exploring to keep performance enthusiasts (i.e., Camaro/Firebird loyalists) happy in a FWD-dominated world. I’m guessing it would be exhilarating to drive."

Redline shows as 6500 rpm -- this would have been a revelation in the time period. That said, given the specific outputs at the time, I wonder if this would have made much more than 240 hp, though that would have been pretty quick in a 3000-ish lb car.

Six grand ain't much. But you can't take the thing on public roads, and otherwise it has all the appeal of a 1980s Chevy crapbox. As interesting at it is, this car is never going to be worth much.

lol you must not live in Michigan...our DMV (Secretary of State) could pretty much run ads much like buy here-pay here car lots with "No title? No VIN? No problem! Bring in whatever you've scratched down on a pizza box or dinner napkin and you'll be driving your previously un-titled vehicle in a few hours!"

Huge fan of Beretta here. Beretta's were cool but not Camaro cool.

Wasn't posting specifically in reference to your pic, just thought the GM80 should be mention too. I had some other pics I had saved from the interwebs years ago but can't find them. Don't remember if it was different versions of this or a possible Camaro version.

I know, but from how it's sounding now, the GM80 and L-Body programs were very closely related.

Then again, titling and driving a one-off vehicle with a one-off engine (dunno where this 3.5L V8 came from) probably isn't the best idea

I'd still get a title for it and drive occasionally, just to everything in good working order.

Just wondering if this Isuzu V8 (or variation) was ever used elsewhere in a production vehicle?

I did read the Isuzu part, but couldn't think of an application within that brand

    Re: Chevrolet V8 Beretta/Feretta

I bought that issue of Hot Rod when it was on the stands.

In that feature they had a number of skunkworks proof of concepts in various states of quality, from rough hacks to production looking. There was a GM-10 Lumina that was FWD with a longitudinal V8 that was rough, a FWD bonneville body dropped on an Impala SS chassis/drivetrain (with an extra 6" between the front wheels and the cowl), and a 4 wheel steering IROC with a carbed 400 HP stroker.

My fave was a production looking 90-94 bodied AWD Lumina that engineering was able to fit a transverse 305 'baby' LT1 with no black metal changes (thanks to compact waterpump & accessories IIRC). 6 speed manual too.
