    Chevrolet Caprice Suggestion Box

I got this email response back, after submitting a "suggestion" to Chevorlet about the Caprice, and also how Kia seems to be jumping into the affordable rwd sport segment with the upcoming K9, while GM still dithers.

    Service Request: 71-978610025
    Customer Relationship Specialist: Ramon

Thank you for contacting the Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center. We appreciate it when customers like you take the time to write to us about suggestions specifically for a production version of the Chevrolet Caprice.

We appreciate you advising Chevrolet of your idea and suggestion as this will certainly provide us an opportunity to review our vehicle portfolio. Feedbacks from our customers are very much welcome and rest assured we are always in the process of developing ways and means to improve and make things more exciting for our customers.

Chevrolet returned to the rear-wheel drive police vehicle scene with the best product available in the industry and that was the Caprice PPV. This RWD vehicle has been keenly awaited by motoring enthusiasts. However the Caprice PPV was specifically developed for police use and no retail versions of this vehicle in the near future has been announced.

However, we have documented your comments and will be forwarding same to the appropriate department for their consideration. Thank you again for taking time out to lend us your comment and opinion.

Politically incorrect response they wanted to send you-but didn't.

I've gotten similar responses to that from other e-mails I've sent to them about the Ute and a RWD coupe or sedan in the past.

Just make sure when you buy a vehicle from a competitor you send along some photos to them and let them know they lost a sale. Its what I plan on doing when the time comes unless they offer what I'd like in the next 2 years.

    Re: Chevrolet Caprice Suggestion Box

I would suggest to GM that this type of car is quintessentially American in character, and should be produced in North America, using GM's genV V8, and other engines, including 4s, 6s, and hybrids. It needs an awd option, as well as eAssist, the 8 speed automatic and distinctive style for each brand that gets it. The Chevrolet version should be an Impala or Caprice, Buick should have a Roadmaster or Invicta, and Cadillac a super-sized version based on the Ciel concept car, perhaps called Sedan De Ville or Fleetwood.
Not only a sedan version should be built, but also an El Camino version and a sportwagon version.
These vehicles could also be a basis for a cuv or suv, using the awd set-up.
While importation of these vehicles may make sense in the short-run, these cars should be built where they are sold, in North America.

If I had been in a better financial/personal situation at the time, a G8 GT would be in my driveway right now. I know that I could get a used low mileage one, but I have now idea how the previous owner treated the car. Plus I like the more subdued look of the Caprice.

No offense to you at all, but that's what everyone says. If you go on GMI/internet comments in general, you'd think that GM would sell 100,000 Zeta sedans a year... Then the reality is that they sell like 30,000 and have to cancel the program.

I for one don't think it would be a volume seller.
However if GM can make a business case to sell a few hundred/year to law enforcement only for a price in the $25-27K range then they sould be able to sell a few hundred more detective models to the public in the mid $30s.

Also sent a request to GM and they pulled the typical PC move and side stepped all of my questions with a canned response.

As a Caprice alone, it wouldn't be a high volume seller. But add in El Caminos, sportwagons, Buicks, Cadillacs, cuvs and suvs derived from it, and the combination would be a volume seller. How many? Who knows, but GM would have a pretty fair idea how many.
Such a line-up could easily be built in LGR alongside the Alpha program cars, and with flex manufacturing, they would build only the number needed.
I didn't think GM had the cajones to do such a program until I saw the Ciel concept - imagination lives on at GM.
So I say to GM - JUST DO IT!

My response for them would be that perhaps they should have advertised the G8 then they may have actually sold a couple of them. Not watering the Pontiac brand with crap like the G3 and G5 while only the Torrent, Vibe, and G6 got any advertising was the problem.

If GM can't offer another option in two years like the G8 then I will likely be buying elsewhere. I too have the same problem with a used G8, I don't know how the previous owner drove it. And most of them I've seen around here are about $5k too high and need new rear tires. Once I finish my Masters I plan on getting a new car. I want a RWD sedan for the functionality and performance.

I think you should reply to them and point out that
"However the Caprice PPV was specifically developed for police use and no retail versions of this vehicle in the near future has been announced."
is not strictly correct. yes it was developed specifically for the Police force but technically it was "undeveloped" from an existing retail vehicle!

G8's were advertised a heck of a lot more than the cop cars people are losing their freaking minds over now. They only want them because they can't have them.

We wouldn't be having this discussion if GM had brought production of the G8 and rwd Impala to NA like they were planning. They should still bring production here.

If we had bought the G8 in the capacity Holden had to build it, the production probably would be here. The demand for much less production capacity wasn't there, so the plans to move it here were scrapped.

Personally, I loved the G8. And those who love a RWD V8 in that price range are a passionate bunch. But the sales numbers just aren't there.

I think there was a combination of factors that led to the lack luster sales situation. Foremost in my opinion was the naming scheme that Pontiac had adopted at that time. If it had used a heritage name, Lemans, Tempest,…..etc, it may have been a different story - Though at that late in the game, Pontiac was on failing life support.

Just look at the buzz and name recognition Caprice has.

It's going to interesting to see how well up up comping K9 will do in the market. From all indications it seems to be a direct segment competitor to the G8 and Caprice. IF it winds up being a decent seller here in NA, then it will show how GM missed the boat again.

Unless GM is going to take a wait-and-see approach, and if the K9 is looking to sell with good numbers, then the Caprice trigger may be pulled sometime next year.

BTW - This is an interesting article.
Kia’s New RWD Concept–Possible Threat for Detroit Muscle Cars?

The K9 even looks to be about the same size as the Caprice.

Though I know nothing can really replace Detroit (or Elizabeth, South Australia) muscle cars, this just might come close - a projected 429 HP, and 376 ft-lbs of torque.
