Prototypes fitted with twin-turbo V-8s producing between 900 and 1,000 horsepower have reportedly suffered from structural distortion so severe that the engine compartment's glass hatch was breaking. These are in line with previous rumors which claimed that the C8 will use a twin-turbo V-8 to achieve hypercar-like performance, with acceleration so "frightening" that GM has supposedly consulted with lawyers about the potential risk of selling something so fast.

Pure Chevrolet propaganda from the drive. They have built cars with more power> I could not possibly see how 1000 horses could not have been planned for at design state. I mean, its not that much more than the C7 ZR1.

I call BS on the article.

Horsepower doesn't bend frames, torque does.

It was brought up in this podcast as well.

"More powerful, quicker and outright faster than a comparable BMW, Cadillac’s newest model is the best reason to skip the letter M and head all the way down the alphabet to V."

That's why I didn't post it in any News section. I find the article a little questionable.

It's not exactly a new problem for car makers - any significant change in torque output shows up weakness in stiffness early in development - go back 60 years and the same thing happened when the AC Aceca 2.0 was re-engined with a 4.2 V8 by AC/Shelby to create the Cobra - simple answer then was to change the 3" main chassis tubes for 4" ones.

Should logically been resolved in the early engineering stages.

I find the story suspect and full of propaganda potiential as well.

Jmo...Im getting wary of the slow leaks on the c8 already...from vaious “news” sources...

No disrespect intended to the original poster and thanks for posting up.

Its America's reliance on Chinese steel. Can't be that simple.. that America used to produce metal that if U hit it with your head.. U'd end up in a vegetative state.. and now.. U hit it.. and U simply leave an impression that looks like a metalized selfie

What's Chinese steel got to do with the aluminium used in the C8 frame?

The extra "i" reduces its strength. Here's hoping it didn't come from the British Commonweld.

I call BS too. GM isn't that dumb to not prepare for 1000+ horses. This is Corvette we are talking.

I seem to remember C6 Corvettes having trouble with roof panels blowing off due to under engineering. It is not unheard of.

Not at all implausible. In the battle between engineers and bean counters, there will always be the push to use just "strong enough" material composition or thickness without going too heavy or costly. Unlike a one-off, no limit personal race car, there are profit margins that GM is going to try to make as big as possible. If it comes at the expense of saving $5 by making one brace 11 gauge over 10 gauge, I guarantee you they will.

As far as Finite Element Analysis (computer sims), it can take literally a day to run simulation on one sub-component of a vehicle for a few milliseconds. To model the stresses an entire chassis can take over several seconds of twisting from one extreme to another would take an enormous amount of computing power and time to accomplish, and like all FEA, is only a rough guideline as it will not find all shortcomings and understand all loading conditions. This is why FEA is always followed by real world testing. I spent 9 years designing parts around FEA failures, then real world failures, this is all part of the design process.
