    Behind the Review: 2014 Traverse

A few weeks ago GM's fleet company brought me a 2014 Traverse LTZ. I didn't ask for one and I didn't even know I was getting it, but they needed something to fill in a dead week, so I got this thing...

At any rate, I wasn't going to write a review on it, but I changed my mind. During the week I had it I was very torn about the vehicle - I loved certain aspects of it, but hated others.

Then I started looking at the two primary competitors (Explorer/Pilot) and realized the Traverse isn't that bad, really...

I ended up taking a really different approach to this review - with a lot of references to the competition and where the Traverse fits into that. Posting it up in the morning!

Wondering you will include 3 minivans also in comparison : Odyssey, Sienna and Caravan as traverse was replacement for the GM minivan also.

I'm glad you brought that up. I personally only have experience with Odyssey and Town & Country. Would I buy a Lambda over a minivan? Well, it depends.

From a space perspective, the Lambdas are quite comparable to minivans. The only variance stems from the fact that they don't have sliding doors. I don't have children, so I'm not a good one to say if the sliding doors are worth a lot to families.

    nsap,
I'm also looking at a Traverse, but need to key on 0-60, 60-100, cornering ability and skidpad g-force.
    Also, does GM offer a drop-in stage 3 dual-turbo?
Seating arrangements, gas mileage and safety are only tertiary concerns.

Thanks in advance for another great review.

On exterior looks, the Traverse wins hands down IMHO. On another note, wish GM would release interior shots other than the one you posted - CGIs FTL, me thinks...

Thanks ,It will be great , you can include Odyssey and Town & Country it self on other aspects apart from sliding doors the the comparison , ex: the Fold to floor third raw, stow and go second row, easy to get in get out, safety, fuel economy, drive feel, features offered on the the price ( ex: the traverse LTZ price , we should be able to get odyssey touring ) . I assume all these offerings are having a 3.6 ltr engine.

    Love Plane's suggestions!

How about which one is the easiest to back up?

What does it do on the Newbergring? Is it faster than an M3? I am also considering this or a Lotus Exige, how do they compare.

Oh, and also very important, how are all the "fonts" inside, are they all the same? Do they match?

    Also..

WOW.....Holy S**t, crying baby Jesus! THAT HONDA INTERIOR IS FREEEEEEAKING AWFUL, WOW. It looks like it was designed by a dyslexic child with ADD and downs, WOW!

Wow, stay classy McGarrett. You do realize we have at least one active member here with a special needs child.

Interesting thought. I will say that the Lambda needs to really be rethought to bring in a much more efficient use of space. Hopefully GM really takes that head on.

Re: Behind the Review: 2014 Traverse

How would you compare it to the Acadia?

My Equinox lease is up in a few months and I am trying to dump it now to get a good deal on something else (the dealers seem keen on taking over the last few payments and getting me into something newer and shinier as well). We are looking for something a little bigger than the Equinox and have feelers out on the Explorer, Acadia/Traverse, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. My favorite at this point is the Jeep GC, but it lacks the 3rd row. The 3rd row is not absolutely critical, but it would be nice as we have two children and have to take two cars whenever we have visitors.

I also looked at the Explorer AWD XLT w/leather. I thought it was pretty nice, but the interior really didn't impress me. They have a really good lease deal on it right now and...it has the 3rd row seating - not a lot of room back there, but would be good in a pinch. I really liked the Acadia and am waiting to hear back from the dealer with an offer. Interestingly, the lease rates on the Acadia seem to be better than on the Traverse, although I haven't really pushed on the Traverse. So, in a couple of days, we may have a new car...if not, oh well.

Re: Behind the Review: 2014 Traverse

I have 4 kids, two of which are 5' 11" & 6'3 so when I was in the market back in 2011 for a replacement for my third GM minivan, I looked long and hard at many vehicles. The Traverse and Acadia hadn't been updated just yet and the most glaring issue I had/have with them is the folding middle seats, which were/are very rickety and felt/feellow quality. The Suburban had no advantage in interior space over the others I considered and I have nothing to tow. The Chrysler T&C was very interesting for the price as was the Caravan but I wanted to move up a bit. The Journey was too small but intersting none the less. I narrowed my choice to the Durango and the Ford Explorer. Both were brand new and had lots to offer but the thing that tipped my decision to the Ford was that it had the highest North American content and was built in Chicago where I live. I don't buy foreign vehicles as I want the jobs to stay here.

I opted for a loaded 4WD Limited with middle buckets but no console so that when my boys sit in the third row, they can stretch their legs between the middle seats if they need to. With over 42k on the odometer, I'm very happy with my choice. If I had to replace it today, it would be a tough choice between a new awd Explorer Sport and an awd Durango RT now with the 8 speed auto and many other updates.
Buy American. Buy Ford. So say we all!

Don't forget the Flex. Even Ford dealers would rather sell you an Explorer than a Flex but if you value room the Flex will win easily.

I just drove the highlander and Pilot just before getting an AWD 2013 traverse this past week. I would say, imports have nothing on it. Explorer lost due to lack of 8 sitting.
