Autoblog First Drive of the Chevy SS

    Another good review:

    http://www.autoblog.com/2013/12/09/2...w-first-drive/

"A four-door Corvette it's not, and neither is it a retro nod to the aforementioned Chevelle SS of the past. But that's okay. Because what the SS is – a credible performance sedan capable of lining up against the best the rest of the world has to offer – is plenty enough to make this Australian-American a winner that doesn't need gimmicks to impress... at least for a few thousand people per year, which is all that The General is planning to sell, anyway."

The most notable nit to pick with the driving experience is the SS's six-speed automatic transmission. Not only is GM's unit a few gears short of most of its competitors...
The SRT comes with only a five speed. Not a true statement.

True for the SRT…but other competition has more gears. I think that is the overall take away. But even with this criticism…the overall assessment is that the SS is a compelling offer.

This car has no real competition. Those that want it will get it, probably run it straight into the shop for a ZR1 supercharger and big ZL1 sports tires.

I am curious to hear what competition the SS has that offers more gears.

I would love to see one of the car magazines do a comparison test against something less outrageous than the SRT8. Do a comparison test against the Genesis 5.0R Spec, BMW 535i and BMW 550i. Would be interesting to see how it ranks. I suspect that the 5.0R Spec sells in equally low volumes.

Hyundai needs to work on their Chassis dynamics before they can begin to play in this segment. have you noticed how racing teams drop them quickly once they try them out. As a race team winner, you want to win and if someone gives you an inferior product, you got to worry about your future. Even Redbull dropped em. If you see their performance at VIR, with C&D lightening lap last year, you will understand why.
    The Subaru BRZ beat it.
They stand no chance against a Brand like Chevrolet with its world class engineering prowess. When a fat ordinary Sedan like the CTS can outstop a Carrera S, can you imagine what this would do to a Hyundai on a track?

Stopping distance has less to do with chassis dynamics and more to do with how expensive the tires on the car are.

If that were/is to be the customer base for this car it would already be a failure. Even in these limited volume numbers this car needs to appeal to customers who never have any intention of doing the above, and in fact it needs to primarily appeal to customers who never have any intention of doing the above.

Not in modern cars. There is a myriad of technologies interacting to stop a car, even the 'ABS' systems are a far cry from original ABS systems of yore.

Correct. The tires, handling dynamics (keeping the car as flat as possible during hard braking) and brake hardware (in this case Brembros up front) all come into play.

The CTS tires are wider...coupled with much larger brakes.

Also depends on how the chassis handles weight transfer. All of these work together as a system.

Then tell Porsche, the full bred Sports car manufacturer to upgrades its cars, because a CADILLAC is more sporting than it is. It's pretty sad when there are people having to make excuses for a purpose built sports car that could cost upwards of double the price of a pedestrian luxury car.
