2017 Malibu "Sport" package a bad idea

In 2016, how is GM creating a "sport" model of one of their most important cars with no boost to power or performance in any way.

    http://blog.caranddriver.com/its-a-p...kage-for-2017/

This car has nothing but some leather, a spoiler and some larger tires. I pray they don't put a "sport" logo on the outside of the car!

I like this, mainly because the "base" LT looks rather plain, this is kind of like the RS Package on the Gen I Cruze, which was an absolute must, IMHO.

    - Here is an idea GM, just make this standard on all Malibu LT's and call it a day, leave the stripper look to the stripper model?

Hold it to the market standard, in which case it makes total sense - Accord Sport, Camry XSE, Altima SR; these are not much more than a visual package. Most buyers are buying it for the badge on that back, not based on the feeling through the seat and wheel. It'd be nice if they had a real sport package with 10% stiffer springs, stiffer frequency select dampers, and bigger anti-roll bars, but then other parts might not be up to snuff for the total package - that might require chassis or suspension mount stiffening, beefier control arms and links, bushing changes that would all need sorted and brought up to a standard; that would cost real money.

I've noticed that GM seems to moving away from "real" options (suspension packages, etc), and moving to just offering a more standard vehicle with the option list limited to high margin appearance add-ons. At least that is my impression.

No. A decal is all they need, oh and Black Wheels.

Actually, the trims you noted for Accord, Camry, and Altima are the real deal, with upgraded hardware that goes beyond the visual stuff:

    - Accord Sport, compared to LX: firmer dampers, strut tower brace, uprated front brakes (12.3" rotors instead of 11.1"), high-flow exhaust system with dual tips, additional 4 hp.

    - Camry SE & XSE, compared to LE and XLE: firmer dampers and springs, solid anti-roll bars (rather than hollow tube style); strut tower brace, trunk mounted brace, re-tuned power steering calibration.

    - Altima SR, compared to S: firmer dampers and bushings, larger anti-roll bars.

    +1
This would make Malibu LT more competitive with Accord Sport. Additionally, the stair steps in the Malibu lineup - from L to LS to LT to Premier - would become more logical. Ideally, GM would leave the price of Malibu LT untouched. Hey, they could advertise "$875 in additional value"!

I wish GM would cook up an RS package for Malibu.

Been crying out at them in various media that the Malibu should get a RS package but this is what we get... a "Sport" sheesh. Maybe what we see at the SEMA show for the Malibu is a preview for a needed RS package.

I find it sad that some people wish for GM to fail and can't comprehend any good news. A plausible explanation for this kind of behavior is that you have a miserable life so you wish the same to others. Cory Pham, Autoblog Poster

GM must return its divisions to being interdependent entities within the corporation. Decentralize and free the different divisions talents to foster brand differentiation and customer loyalty.

I want a Malibu from one of them futuristic movies. All blacked out, flat black paint(or green), brush guard, and spot light.

Sorry Chevy but there isn't anything sporty about this Malibu even though you might think so. All we need is a proper RS package with the real goods then you can call it a day.

I wrote about 12 Suggestion cards back in the Early 90's. These went directly to GM (Canada mind you). These were suggestions from Sales People across Canada, 4 a year for 3 years. "GM NEEDS to build a Factory Off Road Truck"

They did! A ZR2 High Rider.

Yep GM listens. But they are Hearing EV, and with a lot of effort, and if Tesla fails, they just might corner the 10K unit/year market.

I will continue to scream this because it drives me nuts, but you will get no variety in packages unless you by a Camaro or Corvette, and on occasion a Cadillac or two. That's it Gm does nothing but coast on every other model they make imo!

Exactly right. And you only get to pick from shades of grey, black, or white, with maybe one red or dark blue thrown in if you are lucky.

The "sport" model is not even available with the 2.0T. The 2.0T is premier only going forward and the sport package is only available on LT.
