2012 Chevrolet Sonic - Driving Impressions

The General builds a proper small car… a legitimate rival for the Fiesta and the Fit.

It would seem the era of the proper small car is here. Mind you, companies like Honda and Mazda have been doing it right for years, but for many automakers the words “small cars” and the “U.S.” just didn’t jibe.
There have been small cars, but it’s the word “proper” that makes the difference. As an example, the Chevrolet Chevette of many years ago was a solid and reliable little machine, but about as much fun and as interesting as a canker sore.

So when Chevrolet gave us a chance as the first journalists to drive the new Sonic, we had our doubts.
Not anymore. To keep it simple, the Sonic is a well-designed, good-looking, fun-to-drive small car, The General’s anti-Fiesta and Fit-fighter.

We drove the 1.4-liter turbo against the Ford and Honda on a squiggly course. All the cars felt solid and fun, so we’ll need a full road test to make some conclusions. It’s a good bet, however, that the Sonic will match or beat the Ford and Honda.

, but the Sonic is the most sophisticated of the three, at least the 5-door hatchback model.
I bet it will take the sales crown easily, because its not girly like the fiesta.

It's by far the best best looking. I would by this for a DD if they sold it here in Japan....

I see some lift-off of that front right tire!!
This is one of the cars I cannot wait to test in the coming year, slightly behind the Camaro ZL1

A 1.8L engine is ginormous for a car this size. I fail to see how it will be appealing to the foreign markets. Everywhere else they are downsizing their atmo engines. Hell my Swift is a 1.4L and in Europe they sell a 1.2L.

I don't want to get my hopes up yet. Time and time again in these preview articles GM gets a great write-up with how the GM vehicle is better than the competition hands down. Then when the real comparo article comes out GM is midpack or worse.

I like both models, though I a.) wish the hatch looked a little bit less like the outgoing Aveo 5, and b.) I wish the sedan didn't have taillights that look like the last-model Suzuki Forenza. The sedan needed some more aggressive taillights like the hatch, IMO. As it stands though, they are still two attractive vehicles. I hope they sell like crazy.

Can't stand the grill. The rest looks OK. Hope it does well for Chevrolet.

It seems like Chevrolet wants to offer it as a hot pocket rocket in the US unlike in Europe where its getting a 1.2 base and a 1.4 turbo...

Hopefully they can offer an SS package in USA

I like the fact that this is the only car in the segment that offers a turbo option. My only gripe in the looks department is the front license plate I can see looking really goofy as with the current Aveo because of the grille style. And where are the side repeaters? Honda needs them too. And they should be standard on the Fiesta rather than getting them with a premium package. With small cars and all the SUVs, you need all the illumination you can get so they can see you. Otherwise they sound really happy with the way it drives. It will be exciting to see a full on review with all the subcompacts.

Re: 2012 Chevrolet Sonic - Driving Impressions

The more I see this vehicle the more I like it, it's already is ahead of the Fiesta in my mind since they will build it here and not in Mexico or import it from Japan. I love the front grille and the instrument cluster. I wonder how it will compare for features though? That is my lingering concern.

I just wonder if they offer an SS package here will it be the real deal or just a damn trim package? A real Sonic SS needs to be putting out 200-220 HP IMO.

Re: 2012 Chevrolet Sonic - Driving Impressions

With the Cruze equipped with the 1.4T/6AT being bumped up 2 mpg for 2012, anyone want to venture a guess as to the mileage for a similarly outfitted 2012 Sonic? This should be good...
