    2000-2005 Tahoe Opinions

My girlfriend and I were thinking about getting an older utility vehicle. I was curious to hear opinions from owners of some older Tahoe's or Yukon's. We're looking at those and maybe 05-07 Explorers.

Either a Tahoe or a Civic.
    Both should be reliable.
The Tahoe may haul more, but the Civic has vtec technology and stuff.

A Civic doesn't really count as a utility vehicle.

    I owned a '99. Tahoes are great.
Exploders are not nearly as great.

    FIFY.
How long did you have the Tahoe for, what problems did you have?

I was going to avoid the 02-05 Explorers because those are garbage but it seems like a lot of people still drive the 96-01 models and the 06-07 don't seem to score that badly. They are also cheaper than the Tahoe, although probably for a reason.

I owned it for about 5 years in the late '90's. The only real problem I had the whole time was the rear A/C lines corroded.
It's a difficult and $$$ fix, so I had 'em capped. No more rear air. Did a brake job, which was cheap and easy. Truck always ran great.
These things are hard to beat as highway cruisers.

Exploders are cheaper than Tahoes because they're much less desirable.

the GMT800 series Tahoe is/was used as a patrol vehicle in the northern parts of Canada by the RCMP

the only thing I would say to watch out for / avoid is the autoride system as parts can be pricy but other then that it is basically a GM pickup of that era

if you do NOT plan on offroading a Denali / Escalade come in AWD VS 4X4 for better ON ROAD traction in adverse weather but also the 6.0/6.2L engines at a higher fuel burn cost

Had a 2002 Tahoe and made a mistake trading it in for an '08 Enclave. Was a fantastic SUV.

Potential problems - Tahoe has 2 horns, the "low horn" I think is in a bad place which can get water and short out.
The tranny's had the 'sunshell' problem which broke and killed the unit - assume at this age the tranny is new, rebuilt or on its last legs.

Had ours for 110,00 miles and just had the horn issue. Best seats and most comfortable ride we've ever had in an SUV.

My mom had two GMT-800 Yukon XL's (2001 SLT and 2005 SLT) and she encountered transmission failure at 36k miles and I believe around 100k it need an alternator. She traded it for the 2005 and she drove it to 50k with no problems whatsoever. In fact, her 2008 Denali has had many more issues than the 2005 did. Love the GMT-800 platform as it still feels solid today. Nice comfortable ride and the seats were incredible.

Middle son has an '06 Explorer V8. Expect to spend money on front suspension and rear wheel bearings with one of these. None of it is very expensive, and I replaced all 4 ball joints in 3-4 hours on the ground. Other than that it's been good to him, but would only consider one with a V8. Interior has held up better than his brother's Denali. GM's leather quality is spotty.

As has been mentioned, on the Tahoe avoid Autoride at all costs, horrible system. The sun shell issue in the 4L60 is by no means a certainty, and it's not a deal breaker. Would find the one with the least options I could.

    Re: 2000-2005 Tahoe Opinions

While my 2011 Tahoe is newer than you are asking about, it is a fantastic vehicle, and I have had zero problems in nearly 80,000 miles. This on the original tires and brakes! Also, I've kept track of my mileage, 18.3 with a 65-70% highway mix. Straight highway is 19.5-20.9, city around 17. Great vehicle!!!!
The sense of safety is palpable, the ride high and very comfortable.
Chevrolet switched to the six speed automatic before 2011, and it might be worthwhile to get one with the six speed.
