I kinda think this whole exact format thing is silly. This is a forum for distributing news and having discussion amongst its members. Format your original content how you like but when you're all about trying to keep the conversations going and keep the people visiting, why make posting stories here more difficult? Just say make sure you reference/link the original source and don't copy/paste the whole story.

I've given up posting news items that have made the international media but fallen under the forum radar.

It's just about keeping everything neat and organized. If we have everything in the ticker in the same format, it makes everything more visually appealing and easier to use in general.

    Re: PLEASE note posting guidelines

Please remember that we don't make the rules - we simply enforce them.

In this case, as was pointed out, an attempt at uniformity - which takes as much effort as doing it your way - helps make GMI appear more professional and legit.

Plus, it makes our job easier, as we work during the day and don't have the time to adjust every single news posting.

And let's be honest here: GMI is not just some automotive forum - it's the Kalinda (if you've ever seen "The Good Wife") of the GM news forums. This medium has some advantages over the conventional car website, but that doesn't mean we have license to be less legit.

Could you give an example of this?

As the Internet is a global (not "international") medium, and the auto industry is also global, I am unsure what you are thinking of but I'd bet there's something specific you're thinking of.

This section is titled "Suggest a News Item" and is open to all

IMO it should be a trigger for an item in the appropriate "News" section which are rightly not open to all and sundry but I guess you want a forum where contributors provide all the news, in your precise format, instead of those in control.

I see it more as someone suggesting an article to be posted in the appropriate section when a GMI Staff Member moves it there if it is deemed newsworthy.

We encourage you guys to post news articles. Keep 'em coming. Just please make sure they're in the proper GMI format so it makes life a little easier for us Staff Members.

    Global/international - same thing IMO.

No specific examples - the forum is very US-centric so the majority of auto news outside the US falls under the radar.

The site is run by Canadians and I am American, as is General Motors, so it stands to reason. But we *do* post news about GM from around the world. We don't discriminate at all.

But seeing that some of us are more familiar with the local markets than others, we have to rely on the likes of you to help bring us up to spec when we may miss something (for example, how many Americans understand that a young guy driving an Opel Monza may have the same connotations as an American driving an older Camaro?). How many websites allow the level of interactivity that this forum does? That's the beauty of GMI.

And when your reporting and writing become worthy of note, you get elevated to a point where you have carte blanche on this site, as evidenced by some of our contributors who love cars and the industry.

We all play for the same team, right?
