    Genesis Conquest sales - Lexus #1, BMW #2 and Cadillac/Mercedes #3

While many Genesis buyers come from inside the Korean automaker’s family – most directly from Hyundai – Lexus owners represent the largest segment – 30% – of conquest buyers to the brand, followed by BMW (15%), Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz (both 11%). Acura, Audi, Infiniti and Lincoln buyers make up the balance of conquest buyers.

Buyers largely are white, male, college-educated and older than 50, with median household incomes touching $145,000, but Raphael is quick to point out the Genesis brand is reaching out to all potential luxury buyers and welcomes everyone interested in the products and able to afford the vehicles.

Not surprising, Lexus makes up the largest % of conquest sales (as I had stated from the start about the Genesis sedan impacting GS sales).

Burns is already having a conniption about this - making the same arguments/excuses that BMW and MB owners have made against Lexus in the past (and are still making today).

Lexus buyers are more value-minded than the rest. They look for quality, refinement, and feature content. As a fairly cerebral group, they prefer substance to branding.

If this were true, they would stay with Lexus. They are value shoppers, and Hyundai offers value, not substance.

This really just highlights a shift away from luxury cars to really nice mainstream vehicles (at least brands that are still viewed as mainstream, might take some time for Genesis to escape Hyundai).

honestly I wonder if this has something to do with the lower end luxury car offerings like the Mercedes CLA and BMW 1 series, I can see someone after owning one of those and getting into for example a nicely equipped Toyota Avalon switching.

I think "substance" is subjective. For example, I will only buy American makes, so for me all other luxury brands lack the substance of "American" to satisfy my needs. Just like some will never say Cadillac has the substance to compete with the German's.

I never bought luxury cars before as America didn't offer luxury cars that were appealing to me until Cadillac saw the light. So perhaps there are Hyundai fans out there who are looking for luxury but never bought because their "team" didn't offer anything. The GMI illuminati told me I wasn't a real luxury buyer because I was coming from a Chevy inferring I just didn't know any better, even though German cars are quite common where I live and I've been in many....

Now with that said, I am certain there are value shoppers out there that do like the lower price vs. the competition. Just because you are rich doesn't mean all rich people don't care how much they spend.....

By all means I could get a Genesis, but in my mind, I would consinder if a Buick La Crosse, Lexus GS or Chevrolet SS were better deals. I might end up in this case with a Chevrolet SS Manual.. Its just a better value for money, all the 'amenities' these luxury mobiles offer can be had in Kias these days. Their value is in lost residuals.

There is always the Chevrolet Impala LTZ and the ever present Lincolns.. Decisions.. I am glad I am not shopping.. Taurus SHO?

It's not at all surprising that Lexus makes up most of the conquest sales for Genesis. They have the very similar design languages and very similar features. There's very little to differentiate between the two other than the badge on the hood and the deeper discount from Genesis.

Lexus and Buick don't offer them.
And the Genesis drives way better than any KIA. Those Lotus guys they hired did a fine job on the ride.

Lexus ES feature set blows when compared to Genesis G80.
They're losing sales because of "you can't get this" even in the highest trims. Buick LaX, same problem.

    That's an incorrect statement.

Its correct, There is definitely no way there is any added real value (in my head) for gadgets above what you can get in mainstream top tier trim level brands..

ES and LaX are not G80 competitors. They only appear that way because of Genesis' "deeper discount" that I mentioned before.

And here I thought Back Wheel Drive mattered.
Apparently only if it's a Cadillac...

Apparently you have not driven these cars.
They are DIRECT competitors, after the same soft luxury customer. And it seems they are getting cross-shopped like crazy.
I also call the XTS a competitor... it is at least capable of beating the G80's feature set, albeit at a significantly higher price tag.
Can't say that about the ES or LaX.

BMW's a bit harder to explain. Could be owners are tired of their cars beating them up.
Or maybe they want a car that has actual leather seats instead of vinyl.

No, I haven't driven them (have no interest in any of them). But the G80 is a mid/large back-wheel-drive (as you put it) sedan. ES and LaX are FWD re-skins of mainstream cars. Their mainstream platforms probably don't allow for some of the features.

Or maintenance. Or it's just the few Koreans who ditched their BMWs for Genesis (after all, we are talking about 15% of likely a very small number here; note how the non-Hyundai mainstream brands are not included in the "conquest sales" category).
