Car compare: 2018 chevrolet equinox vs. 2018 chevrolet malibu

Stick with the midsize sedan or go crossover?

With the rise of crossovers as the popular choice for American consumers, should you rule out midsize sedans as your next vehicle? Let’s take a look at the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox and 2018 Chevrolet Malibu to compare the two family cars’ advantages and disadvantages. For 2018, the Malibu is essentially unchanged from the previous model year, save for a larger 15.8-gallon fuel tank becoming standard on cars with the smaller 1.5-liter turbo-four. The Equinox is all-new and now features an all four-cylinder-engine lineup that includes the same turbocharged units found in the Malibu plus an efficient diesel engine.

All comes down to your space requirements....

I was suprised to see they increased the gas tank size in the Malibu, I believe Ed had some unkind words about the original, smaller tank - guess GM saw the light of day on that one!

If you need cargo room, get the bigger car. If you want fuel economy, get the smaller car.

Yeah. The big car is bigger. The lighter, more aero car is quicker and more MPG-er. EASY button.

If you're like me and painfully tired of being the contortionist you dump the sedan and go for the SUV.

Is the Malibu hard to get in and out of? Lower, yes - I believe the doors are plenty big though.

Outside of an occasional large/tall bulky item, I don't think the cargo disparity (in the real world) is nearly as much as the numbers would indicate.

No disagreement there, but I'll likely have 5-10 new cars by then........

The new Equinox is basically the same size as our Cruze; sits up a litter higher and has a littler taller cabin.
(The Malibu is both, wider and longer)

Ed753, the situation is this: The raked back angle of the windshield in combo with being low as most cars are compounded by some people with height issues +/- and aging bodies that don't bend so easily any more. I was/am sick and tired of always having to contort and about bang my head getting in. There is a big difference to the two products in that respect. Neanderthal says it best as time will tell, young'uns just don't get it.

Re: Car compare: 2018 chevrolet equinox vs. 2018 chevrolet malibu

I have the 2016 Malibu Hybrid, I'm aged appropriately per Neandethal's scale, and I'm just plain big in all dimensions at 6'5" and 275#. Getting in and out of it is very easy. Granted it is not a half step up like my Colorado, but the windshield angle has no impact on getting in and out and the B pillar is not an issue with the seat all the way back. The seats in the leather package are more comfortable than any GM or competitor seat except the new Lacrosse. I drove the 2018 Equinox with 1.5T and found it nice, but not compelling as it is a bit narrower than the Malibu seating area which removes the couple inch advantage in seat height.

2003 Porsche Boxster S (sunny days and track events)
April 2008 to August 2017 - 2008 Colorado CrewCab Z71 RWD. 81K miles and 21.2 mpg with a great truck
May 2014 to June 2016 - Cruze Diesel - 36.8 mpg over 33K miles with best tank of 50.2 mpg
April 2012 to May 2014 - Chevy Volt - 3 tanks of gas in 12.2K miles.

Well, I guess we can safely conclude from this discussion that we're all different!

I find it interesting that a big reason that is given in many publications (many linked on various articles here) is that Crossovers are more popular now because they are almost equal to sedans in terms of performance and fuel economy. (I wish I had the articles to link but I have read that MANY times in car magazines and online). The truth is, people buy them not because they almost match the sedans, but for other reasons. As this article points out..the Equinox costs a good deal more, gets a pretty good deal less fuel economy, and performs worse by a decent margin. It must be the image of the ride height, because when you do compare them side by side..it is NOT because crossovers are matching (or very close to matching) sedans in price, performance, or economy.

To me, as a convert from decades of sedans addiction, crossovers are MORE HANDY. You get more space in a smaller footprint. It's easier to reach in for chirruns seats, the load floor is easier access than a trunk, and people likely look at real world convenience over whatever performance parameters the car mags and various carnuts like ourselves find important.

Does Krissy Working Mom or Housewife, or Fred Baseball-&-Football-Practice pop, give a hoot about .03 G cornering, a half second in the quarter or one second to sixty, or five MPG overall? Obviously real world issues trump data geek stuff.

An extreme example I've used before, but the KIA Soul has similar interior measures in almost all areas to an Impala or a Charger or other biggun-200-incher. That's with a 163" OAL and a 34.8' turning circle vs. whatever those are, probably approaching 40' just as it is for my Terrain.

In review, tall wagons Trump sedans by being/having:
    1. Handy.
    2. Trendy.
    3. Outward visibility advantage.

Consumers also--irrationally IMHO--demand AWD, but that's another discussion regarding a different set of sometimes imaginary performance parameters.
