Buick Regal Sportback and TourX dead after 2020

Saw this coming a mile away. Hardly a shock, but what a shame.

Buick will go sedan-free by killing the Regal after 2020
The TourX wagon is also getting deep-sixed

Pour one out for the Buick Regal. Citing a growing lack of demand, the firm announced it will deep-six its last remaining sedan and its only station wagon after the 2020 model year.

Buick spokesman Stuart Fowle told Motor Authority that buyers clearly prefer crossovers and SUVs; so far, nearly 90 percent of the company's 2019 sales have come from high-riding models. In other words, the company's decision to send the Regal to the pantheon of automotive history is business, not personal. "Buick continues to be ahead of the consumer shift towards SUVs," Fowle explained.

Autoblog confirmed the decision applies to the sedan, which is available in a sporty GS configuration (pictured) that we praised as "the coolest car Buick has made in years," and the TourX wagon, which attracted Buick's wealthiest buyers and sold far better than the company expected. Its retirement underlines the colossal difficulty of selling a wagon that's not a Subaru Outback in America.

Buick, like Holden, simply weren't selling enough to make the deal profitable for PSA even those they just added these volumes onto their Insignia production.

I guess that a Buick version of Malibu, built in China, is the only hope now.

Why the hell the Regal isnt a Chevy is mind blowing. The car is pretty damn good and to just waste all that money on development and costs to bring it here and sell 74 of them is outrageous.

Shame. The base price of a Regal's not bad. With AWD, I might get one instead of a Encore GX this year. I like having one sedan in the car pool and it likes mid-size sedans will soon be gone from GM.
    Will Malibu be next?

It wouldn't be surprising if certain Malibu variants/trim levels are next on the chopping block. Malibu Hybrid was abruptly cancelled for MY 2020; perhaps Malibu 2.0T will be gone for MY 2021?

No surprise. Car doesn't really stick out and there is zero marketing spent by GM.

Sedans aren't selling much anymore but GM should have a small car. Malibu is pretty much the last sedan standing and I think the Regal is a better car.

If you are smart buy a lightly used one - resale on these is already horrible, it will only get worse.

Ya know, If Pontiac was still around..... they could had easily used The CTS platform for a RWD Grand Prix/GTO (American Designed that is) and sell it in China as a Buick but nooo...

Maybe the way things are going we end up with all GM sedan production in China, who still buy a significant number, and crossover/truck production US/Canada/Mexico? Kind of like BMW, their largest factory is in the USA, churning out crossovers, but sedans are basically imported from Europe etc.

Not saying itís good, just that it might be the reality. Of course import tariffs could change things.

The only surprise with this story is that they didn't announce the discontinuation a year ago.

on the "surface" it SUX but is likely our only hope for sedans that are "better than BASIC"

and MIGHT "HELP" the trade tensions once trump is out and "cooler heads" / MORE global focused administration is elected

What's the point of Buick with only SUVs? They were supposed to be the upmarket Chevy cars while GMC is upmarket Chevy trucks/SUVs.

Sedan market has basically become the crossover market. Reality is people don't buy midsize sedans much anymore.

I think GM should have 1 solid sedan offering and 1 solid small car offering (non-luxury). Unfortunately I have a feeling Malibu is going to get canned soon.

Of course always curious that Chrysler keeps pumping out Chargers and Challengers.

Agreed, why team an all CUV/SUV brand with an all CUV/SUV/truck brand?

We all knew the death of the Opel Regal was coming soon. Perhaps a great deal on a leftover GS V6 can be had in the near future.
