Toyota announced that it is accelerating its electric vehicle plans by 5 years and partnering with new battery makers to secure supply as it unveiled images of upcoming all-electric cars.

However, the automaker’s electrification plan is still heavily focused on hybrids instead of all-electric vehicles.
During a briefing with the press this week, Toyota Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi said that the automaker plans for half of its global sales to be electrified vehicles by 2025 – 5 years ahead of previous plans.

Some automakers refer to “electrified vehicles” when talking about electric vehicle plans and they are generally using the term to talk about the mix of hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric (BEV) vehicles.

The picture at the link right above the videos and below the black and white little things with these same models all spread out is a better photo I think. I kind of like what they have going on if these show up anything like them.

It will be an interesting future, if the articles I read are right - VW, GM, Tesla say (which is my recollection from articles I've read) battery powered vehicles will reach cost parity with ICE in a few years. The caveat on that is they expect the cost of ICE to go up to meet more stringent environmental rules. I do find it hard to believe that hybrids will be competitive - needing to have both an ICE engine and batteries.

EV's are the biggest joke ever pulled on the American Public, they will not be "Better for the Environment", equal in "Re-Fuel" time or "Operating Costs" especially when total Electric costs are taken into consideration.

Your Residential Electric Bill will be close to $1000 a month if EV's are commonplace and Manufacturing Companies will see a huge increase in their total operating costs and Solar is not going to be able to offset the massive increase in demand. Not to mention their will only be One Source for all power needs - a very dangerous situation that can and will be controlled by a select few.

Sorry, no interest in Coal Powered EV's or the devastation making and operating them will have on the Earth's Environment.

Globaloney warming is actually the biggest joke, but government force feeding of EVs into the automotive marketplace in the U.S. go hand in hand with that one.

The inimitable Patrick Bedard, former contributor to Car and Driver, said 25 years ago "The promises made for the alternatives to gasoline are very seductive. And you know how seductions turn out." Bedard's statement is as true today as it was back then.

Suffice to say that Toyota's EV plans, as outlined in Mr. Terashi's presentation yesterday, aren't a result of latent consumer demand for Toyota BEVs in the U.S. market.

    This part is interesting:

“However, the automaker’s electrification plan is still heavily focused on hybrids instead of all-electric vehicles.”

Toyota hybrid sales are up 44% YTD...even though Prius sales are down! Rav4 hybrid selling very well.

And that's the thing, car sales are down, whereas SUV/CUV sales are up. So most likely the increases will come from those and probably not just at Toyota.

sounds PR good "Lectrics ahead 5 years" when 1/2 of them lectrics are GAS with prius tech added so as a consumer we get the SAME car but better without the BATTERY EV "issues"

What an uninspired and dreadful looking line-up.

Ugh..Why do most EV's for the commoners have to be so damned awful to look at?

GM could do the same using Voltec stuff to make hybrids, but to my knowledge they aren’t (except Malibu Hybrid). Does anyone know what GM is doing with hybrid tech? Equinox Hybrid, XT4 Hybrid etc.

The excellent Voltec based powertrain used in the current generation Malibu Hybrid was also used in the China market Buick LaCrosse 30H. But that powertrain is apparently no longer available on the refreshed 2019 LaCrosse in China; only a 2.0L turbo four appears on the spec sheet.

In the U.S. market, all Voltec based vehicles have either been discontinued or sell in very low volume. Same goes for the "mild hybrid" eAssist system. AFAIK, GM hasn't made any recent announcements about upcoming hybrid vehicles (either HEV or PHEV) - no hybrid versions of Equinox, XT4, Envision, etc.

Does it really matter. The future looks bleak with slight variations of the same 5 door box.

I'd go hybrid any day over 'lektrik. Unless I had a fleet, and garage space, for five or more cars, that would change things.
