Toyota Has Allegedly Stopped Development Of V8 Engines

Toyota Has Allegedly Stopped Development Of V8 Engines
    Carscoops
BY BRAD ANDERSON | POSTED ON AUGUST 13, 2020

report out of Japan claims that Toyota is canceling the development of its V8 engines, which may spell the end of the long-awaited Lexus LC F, at least with a twin-turbo eight-cylinder as was initially expected.

Toyota, like other car manufacturers, has been adversely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and this has reportedly prompted it to shift its focus to turbocharged V6 engines and electrified powertrains rather than continue to forge ahead with V8s.

Mag-X has broken the news, but did not provide many details. If the report is indeed true, this would mean the twin-turbocharged V8 that was being developed for the racing version of the Lexus LC for this year’s 24 Hours of Nurburgring has been canceled. Lexus had committed to offering this engine in future road cars and would have most likely debuted it in the LC F.
In June, a separate report from Japan claimed that Lexus had decided to discontinue the LC F project due to the costs and manpower required to finish the car’s development and bring it to the market. The twin-turbo V8 was expected to displace 4.0 liters and could have easily pumped out in excess of 600 hp in road-going specification, making the LC F an absolute weapon.

At the time, it was claimed Toyota may have continued developing this engine and potentially used it for its large pickup trucks in North America. It was also alleged the LC 500’s 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 could make way for a detuned version of this 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. If the Mag-X report is to be believed, this will no longer be the case.

If news are correct i assume this is the end of any future F models.
No more GS, IS will probably also be discontinued in couple of years,
That leaves RC and LC.. unless they make some crazy V6 TT+hybrid with 600+ hp i don't see reason for F moniker on vehicles.

They could pay Yamaha to built them another V10. Amazing engine.

But i think the reason is they won't be offering any high performance vehicles in future...if the rumors are true.
So they probably don't need anything over 450 hp in near future.
I think rumors for this new V8 4.0 l TT engine started 7-8 years ago.

Hybrid V6's, batteries or even TTV6's can produce so much power now I can easily see a manufacturer getting out of V8's.

Actually TRD builds them inhouse for all the Toyota teams but it is quite similar in design to the indomitable Chevy NASCAR V8 engine.

Toyota used Yamaha a lot. If i remember correctly even present v8 is developed with help from Yamaha (i think it started in 2005 or something like that). I know heads and valvetrain on 5.0 l V8 are developed by Yamaha. They (Toyota) should just paid Yamaha to develop new v8 TT.

that sucks...but its understandable, I guess. Next gen LC if ICE powered will mimic the LSs engine options which if im not mistaken doesn't offer a V8.

Toyota make a few different V8's

One Turbo Diesel that they're dropping

Which in my opinion is a huge mistake

Toyota's 4.7L V8 is an Very Reliable V8. maybe even more durable than the LS Chevy V8
