Tesla's German plant will build 500,000 cars a year

FRANKFURT -- Tesla plans to build 500,000 electric vehicles a year at its new factory on the outskirts of Berlin, Germany's Bild newspaper reported.

Tesla's plant will create 10,000 jobs, Bild said, citing planning documents to develop the site which is as large as 420 soccer pitches. Construction will start in 2020, the newspaper reported.

Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that a site in Gruenheide, Brandenburg, had been chosen to build Tesla vehicles. Tesla also will establish an engineering and design center in Berlin near the German capital city's new airport.

The factory will make batteries, powertrains and vehicles, beginning with the Model Y crossover, Musk said. The Model 3 will be built there later, according to reports.

German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that Tesla will invest up to 4 billion euros in the plant.

Germany ain't U.S. - it doesn't welcome every possible foreign-owned manufacturer with open arms and labour costs are very high. I am very surprised Tesla didn't choose either Slovakia or Poland.

Self reliance, build where you sell. Fair trade, not free trade.

That said, doesn’t Tesla owe the US taxpayers? The taxpayers funded them and now they are building plants elsewhere. Where’s our cut?

Tesla's intention will be to make profits on cars built at their German Gigafactory - in the normal manner for a multinational, those profits will go to head office, which is in the USA.

Who would have thought an American car company would become the standard of the world again? The Germans still can't get close to Tesla despite enormous resources and historic expertise.

Isn't PSA closing down old Opel plants? I would think Musk would go on a fire sale instead of building a new plant.

Pure Trump crap. They pay their taxes for whatever they build in US.
Tesla is your problem, while GM bends backwards for the commies ?

Governments in Germany increased subsidies for electric vehicles by 50%, extended the validity period for those subsidies by 5 years, and is subsidizing the construction of additional EV charging stations as well.

Tesla's decision to build a factory near Berlin came about one week after the aforementioned government actions in Germany.

German Unions would probably have a say in anything like that. Tesla has thus far (as far as I know) been non-union. The German government had to have wanted this.

Bags of money is good; no-matter if its from the vehicle purchaser or the government.

Tesla stock just broke $400 this week, on so many levels the guy (Elon) is a fraud, but then on others, he does appear to defy gravity.

$TSLA is one of those things, I'm watching pretty-close, but not touching.

Smart phones are believed to be bad for us too, but that has hardly mattered. People want what they want, and once the market is filled with plenty of EV options, they will quickly realize the benefits of EV and not care about the few negatives. Who would have thought everyone wants to carry around huge bricks in their pockets, with battery life that barely gets through the day.

Doesn't Germany have the highest electricity rates in the industrialized world?
