Recall may give some Toyota owners a brand new sports car

BMW has issued a recall for seven 2020 Toyota Supras because the driver's seat belt may malfunction. It could potentially lead to those car owners getting a new car as a replacement.

    That's not a typo: seven.

That's also not a typo: BMW, not Toyota, is issuing the recall.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said the seat belt loop mounts may fail in a crash due to improper welding, potentially preventing the driver from being properly restrained.

They should just upgrade them to the full BMW model instead of the ugly toyota version.

How in the world can a seat belt problem result in totalling a car? The seat belt anchors are integral to the structure? Who designed this? And people rag on GM.

So, why is BMW issuing this recall? CNET reports BMW now manufactures the Supra in Austria. It notes that some Toyota "purists" don't take too kindly to the European automaker having such a big hand in the Japanese sports car.
But are you laughing because it is a Toyota or because it's a Toyota made by BMW?

Or is it because it's only 7, unlike GM's ignition switch recall of 30 million?.........

I hate articles like this which assume everyone understands why the entire car needs to be replaced for a weld. Why can't this be fixed? Seems drastic to replace the entire car for this.

Are they going to ship back to Austria or create a service repair procedure and send out to all 2,000 Toyota Dealerships?

Think about what would be involved to repair? Remove 1/2 the interior, remove items under the car.

Then revalidate proper repair; by crashing each car?

Since most are new, and the cost of the repairs, they wouldn't be able to sell them as new.

Even more to their credit, Toyota's rollout of the all-new Supra has gone infinitely smoother than the rollout of the all-new Leaking Aviator.

While I credit Toyota for their handling of it, I too was left with the same question as BlackGTP. The above response only raised more questions than answers...

[a] What is the cost you have estimated for Toyota/BMW to ship 7 cars to Austria? Indeed, Ford sees value in dragging thousands of shoddy Aviators around to be repaired vs 7 Supras.

[b] Where did you read 1/2 of the interior had to be removed? Even so, that's probably an hour's effort for techs that are familiar with the car... versus a whole-car replacement?

[c] Does every car off the line need to be crash tested? Would'nt they simply need to ensure the new weld was conducted per established standards?

[d] Despite enormous costs, I presume Ford is patching their Aviators together with an intent to sell them... despite some requiring frame x-rays (and presumably patching).

What does the Aviator have anything to do with a recall for seven supras?

Sounds like you have some hate and anger issues, let it go.

If the weld will change the temper of the metal and thus the strength, I can see this being a problem. Since the amount of affected units is so low, it is probably cheaper for them to replace the cars rather then assemble a team and send them all over the US to fix such a small amount of cars.

Sounds like you have issues of bias causing an inability to see clearly. In the event your prejudice has rendered you completely blinded let me guide you as to why I typed that about the Leaking Aviator:

I seem to have missed your response to Ed whereby you asked him "What does [GM] have anything to do with a recall for seven supras?" Could you please point me to where you did that? Thanks.

Ironically (or perhaps I should say hypocritically), it sounds like you have some hate and anger issues, let it go.

He's just angry because he has to drive a Sonata everyday while his Cyclone sits in hermetically sealed storage in hopes of someone offering him $30k for a 25 year old mini-truck.

Got it, you are just being irrational and just want to resort to foolish, childish rants.

Your main "response" is that since one person said something you don't like that is some moral justification for you to do the same thing (that you allegedly despise so much) or take it to the next level.

Like I said, hate and anger seem to fuel you. Let it go.
