RAV4-derived AWD tech coming to 2020 Camry, 2021 Avalon

2020 Toyota Camry AWD And 2021 Avalon AWD Debut With RAV4 Tech
    NOV 13, 2019

    motor1.com

    Winter is coming.

Despite more and more people flocking to crossovers and SUVs, Toyota is well aware there are still many people out there who would prefer to buy the once traditional sedan. Yes, year to date sales of the Camry are down by 1.6% to 285,058 while those of the Avalon have dropped by 16% to 24,208, but despite the decrease, Toyota still has a solid customer base for these two sedans.

Some of these people likely want the extra grip provided by an all-wheel-drive system without having to buy an SUV such as the RAV4 or the Highlander. For these people, two of the company’s sedans are getting an all-paw system, although sadly it won’t be called All-Trac as it was the case with the all-wheel-drive Camry sold from 1988 until 1991.

Available for the 2020MY Camry and 2021MY Avalon, the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system developed in-house is derived from the RAV4 and is available exclusively on the U.S.-spec cars. Depending on situation, the hardware will be able to send up to 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear axle, and when AWD is not needed, the electromagnetic controlled coupling disengages the propeller shaft from the differential to cut fuel consumption.

AWD can be had only with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine is rated at 202 horsepower for the Camry LE, XLE, and SE, while the Camry XSE and Avalon XLE and Limited versions get 205 hp and a pair of exhaust tips.

It's a smart move, especially since the parts are basically off the shelf.

SUVs and crossovers are the rage, but there are still people who want ordinary, bread n' butter sedans. And for those customers, many have to go without AWD, unless you want to get pigeon-holed into the few exceptions (like a Subaru or a luxury sedan).

I know that if I was in the market and lived in a place that gets snow, I would appreciate the security and safety of an AWD system.

Let's hope they re-jigger the anti-skid bots so Camry and Avalon do a bit better than the RAVVer did on the moose test.

I don't think I'd ever feel safe in a car that didn't pass the Mousse test. The thought of all that dark chocolate all over my car scares me.

To me with the slumping car sales, this seems like a good way to try and boost them a bit just like the "gamble" they took in the new Camry's somewhat bolder styling.

Not to mention you could be arrested for chocolate abuse and waste. A turrible waste.

And yes, the Moose Test is often referred to by Amurrican road test professionals.

It's a shame they wont offer it with the V6.

If the Avalon is still made, in 5 or 6 years we were going to look at it to replace our 2017 Lacrosse.
"The car's brilliant and ... a great surprise, pleasant surprise for all Corvette lovers everywhere ... a huge shock to our competitors ... because I don't think anybody was expecting something that good. What pleases me the most about it was that ... I can say this is the first car that's come out, that was done since I left.

Bolder styling. Is that what they call it? All I could come up with was "double ugly". And what's up with the electrical tape angling down from the outside corners of the tail lights? At least customers could just peel that off, I guess.
It sounded pretty good until I actually said it.

Toyota pushed the Overton window on polarizing style. Toyota's customer good will might have helped them get away with get away with it long enough for customers to get used to it.
