Keep in mind that GMs I6 diesel is based on the same CSS architecture as the new 2.0T, 2.7T, and other upcoming 3cyl and 4cyl engines. GM could easily do a gas I6 if they wanted to. With all the BOF trucks, SUVs and vans eventually moving to VSS-T it would be nice to see the diesel and a gas I6 spread throughout the range.

I've been fascinated with the idea of Ford combining two of their 1.0/1.5 liter 3 bangers. I believe they were able to reliably get 150-175HP out of the 1.0L engine, I wonder what they could do with a 2.0L six? Even if only 300-325HP I think it'd be a great engine for a Miata style vehicle!

Anyway, the article also states that Mazda is going to push upmarket...which will be very interesting. Reason why it'll be interesting is because they won't have a downmarket sibling to sort of dilute their upmarket aspirations. They'll almost be like a Japanese BMW or MB in that regard.
This is going to be interesting and worth the wait...maybe?

Actually, now you can get the CX5 with the 2.5T that's in the 6 and CX9 - should be faster than the 2.0T Equinox too (from C&D data). They expensive though.

It would have to be a roadster with a longer hood in order to fit such an engine in it, but would be cool to see something like that produced. To be honest I just don't see this happening, not enough sales there for US mainstream auto makers.

Wings over at FIN took a look at it and found that a 2.0L I6 would be just barely longer than the 2.0L I4 Ford currently uses. The 1.0L I3 is extremely compact so an I6 based upon it is probably similar in length to a larger I5. Probably long enough that it'd not make a lot of sense in a transverse application, but largely meaningless in a longitudinal vehicle.

Agreed. It sounds like a lot of fun even if the bean counters won't like it!

That idea reminds me of the 1995 Chrysler Atlantic Concept-car who combined 2 4 bangers from the Neon to create an I8.

    Here is to long hoods..
Ford had a great car in the XR6 Turbo here in Australia and they had to detune it as it out performed the V8 at the time. It was the Barra engine. My car has the previous 40L i6 running on LPG or petrol.
