    Love the idea just have a hard time seeing a new straight 6 (or any 6) in Mazda6/CX-5 size vehicles. Now the CX-9 and/or a flagship sedan or sports coupe would make for serious Zoom-Zoom.

    Agreed. The ‘we will supercharger/turbocharge and hybridized everything into relevance’ approach only gets you so far when every engine is a four-banger. Volvo needs a larger engine. For the life of me I don’t understand why they don’t just let Yamaha produce a low displacement version of the SHO V8 they once built for Volvo and are still developing and building for their own marine engine division. Near instant fix without huge money spent.

    I6 engines are great but the packaging is difficult and in this day and age of high development cost it could hurt them in the long run.

    GM found out the hard way with the high cost and limited use of the DOHC I6 they had. Cost stopped use in the full size trucks as it was cheaper to put a V8 in it.
    Apples and oranges. I expect this will be a derivation of the four cylinder that they are currently using anyway.

    The common theme is:
    I4=2.0
    I6=3.0
    V8=4.0

    That means Mazda will do something goofy and come up with a 2.5 liter I6 and be underpowered compared to everyone else.
    Even when allied with Ford, Mazda always tried too hard to be different.

    Cars considerably smaller than the Mazda 6 have had straight six engines in them.

    If the CX-9 had an option for an engine with more cylinders it would be on my short list,but since it doesn't......pass.

    Today’s Mazda is the purest of all Asian brands, they are literally the Japanese Alfa Romeo. Visually appealing design that has emotion. With light well handing platforms. Lots of power would be just icing on the cake.

    Typical Mazda development, draws lots of interest with novel approaches that doesn't convert into significantly increased sales

    Agreed. The USDM waited forever for the Skyactiv Diesel only to ever see a trickle of it. Even the regular gasoline engines are not much to write home about. The less said about the rotary, the better.

    They're pretty decent looking cars, but no motive power. I'd love to see GM to strike a deal with Mazda to sell them Ecotec turbo motors; that would be something. But I have a feeling that in 20 years or less, all of the Japanese car companies will be in a keiretsu with Toyota as the master. Maybe Honda will escape, but everyone else has Toyota lurking in their backgrounds...
    Thanks,
    George

    I wish GM would develop an inline Six again. I personally love them. Great job by Mazda.

    I agree but with the transverse CUV line up that REQUIRES a V6 ....

    lol @ the last few posts...

    Anyway, the article also states that Mazda is going to push upmarket...which will be very interesting. Reason why it'll be interesting is because they won't have a downmarket sibling to sort of dilute their upmarket aspirations. They'll almost be like a Japanese BMW or MB in that regard.

    What naturally Aspirited V6 right now puts out more power than the new GM V6 3.6 liter.
