Ford's profits fall nearly 99% for year, due to Explorer woes

"Dearborn — The botched introduction of the new Explorer SUV caused what CEO Jim Hackett said would be Ford Motor Co.'s "year of execution" to fall flat, with the Dearborn automaker posting a net income of just $47 million last year — a 99% decline from 2018".

Is that a typo?! I thought f150 was the sole source of all their profits..

I did see a link a little while ago claiming Ford was looking at heading to bankruptcy inside of 5 years if they don't stem the flow of red ink

Wow, I hope Ford is in better shape than this article seems to paint, if not...yikes

It is amazing that a long-time vehicle manufacturer such as Ford was unable or unwilling to launch a new vehicle without so many problems.

I had posted prior news articles in another thread about the Chicago assembly plant that was experiencing significant problems, caused by its UAW employees. I suspect that is the real reason for so many problems with the failed launch of the new vehicles.

Its a brand new modular platform. If anybody thought that was going to go off w/out a hickup, you are delusional. I did not expect this level of issues, however. They're investing in a ton of new product right now, so to a certain extent, the numbers reflect that.

Haven't they had problems with the Chicago factory for a while?

Only a Ford lover or GM hater would make such a statement! For you information, GM is doing great in spite of the long strike.

This is a bit misleading. Its income is $47 million because of large one time charges. Ford's cash position is actually stronger now than it was 12 months ago.

Fords problem is lack of technology investments in Electrics and self driving technology. Rivian cannot save them fershur...

    Shhhhhhhh

In October, Ford lowered its 2019 earnings guidance by $500 million to between $6.5 billion and $7 billion. Ford also shaved 3 cents off of the top range of its earnings per share forecast, to between $1.20 and $1.32 per share. For 2019, Ford's adjusted earnings were $6.4 billion, or $1.19 per share.

    Exactly!

GM had ALL kinds of problems with Gen II Cruze, and the new Silverado and Sierra seems to be having more than it's fair share of "growing pains"............

Actually I think the Silverado and Sierra are doing fine. I think Ram has had a far harder time than GM has with its new pickup.
