Ford CEO Confirms Hybrid F-Series Pickup

Ford CEO confirms hybrid F-Series pickup.

Ford CEO Mark Fields has confirmed plans to launch an F-Series hybrid pickup.

Speaking to NPR, Fields said the company is working on the model and it will be launched by the end of the decade. The executive was coy on specifics but he confirmed the model will be a conventional hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid. Fields went on to say the truck will be rear-wheel drive so it remains unclear if a four-wheel drive system will be optional.

There's no word on which engine will be paired with the hybrid system but the F-150's most economical option is the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 which enables the model to return 19 mpg city / 26 mpg highway / 22 mpg combined.

In related news, Fields admitted low gas prices are making hybrid and electric vehicles less appealing to consumers as they are "not a very good financial decision" right now. However, he says Ford is thinking long term and realizes oil is a nonrenewable resource. Fields went on to say higher levels of electrification will be necessary in the future not only to meet consumer demand but also regulatory requirements.

Well, let's see how this plays out. GM had Hybrid versions of the GMT-900 trucks, but they didn't sell all that well, and the Hybrid variant was axed for the K2XX trucks. Let's see if it makes a return now that Ford is going to build one.

I thought Ford would be out on diesel since they doubled down on EcoBoost. I've thought that the 3.2L I5 in the F150 would be a good idea.

Any idea why the GM ones didn't catch on? Too expensive? Not enough fuel savings?

Did they do hybrid SUVs too?

    All of the above.

And yes. Same deal with the SUVs. I actually did spot an Escalade Hybrid on the highway today though.

I don't think I've ever seen a hybrid truck around, but I have seen several of the Hybrid SUVs. I just still don't see a hybrid truck being very popular with their demographic. They make better sense in the SUVs.

Pretty much, yeah. IIRC they got 20/23 for fuel economy.

Not too bad, but not that great for the price premium they had on them.

Yeah, they did Hybrid SUVs as well. All three, in fact.

No idea as to why. One of the local towns bought a couple of Hybrid Silverado Crew Cabs back in 2009-2010. The rest of their fleet is F-Series trucks.

My mom looked at a Hybrid Tahoe/Yukon back in 2008 instead of an Acadia, but didn't like it because of the thinner seats, no power liftgate and the front fascia wasn't pleasing to the eye. That same dealer had one sit on the lot for over 2 years.

My mom looked at a fully loaded (Nav, Sunroof, DVD RES) 4WD Tahoe Hybrid back in '08. Sticker was like $55,000 (around the same as a loaded LTZ), but you got the $7500 gubmint tax credit if I remember right. Not any more expensive than the loaded SLT Acadia she ended up purchasing instead.

Resale value is terrible on the Hybrid Tahoe's/Yukon's for some reason.
