FCA Recalls 296,000 2019 Ram 1500 Pickups for Non-Deploying Airbags

Fiat Chrysler is recalling 295,981 Ram pickups in the United States because their airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may be deactivated in a crash, according to the company and filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The defect is in every Ram 1500 built through April 29, 2019, the date after which FCA updated software for the start of 2020 production. The problem lies in the occupant restraint controller, which is the main processing unit that decides whether or not to deploy the airbags and pretensioners in an accident. When the driver shuts off the truck, the controller may power off too soon during a "memory cleanup"—not much different than how your home computer clears its memory during shutdown—which can permanently corrupt the controller. When that happens, an airbag light can illuminate, all sorts of fault codes can generate, and at worst, the truck's airbags and pretensioners won't work.

A corrupted computer module in nearly 300,000 2019 Ram 1500 trucks means airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may not work in a crash.

Re: FCA Recalls 296,000 2019 Ram 1500 Pickups for Non-Deploying Airbags

FCA recalled 1.4 million cars and trucks in 2016, including the 2009–2012 Ram 1500, for non-deploying airbags as part of a supplier-wide defect that affected more than 10 million additional cars from four other manufacturers. In 2017, FCA recalled a million Ram pickups, including the 2013–2016 Ram 1500, for faulty sensors that could disable the side airbags and pretensioners. In February, nearly 600,000 Ram HD pickups were recalled for steering loss. Most recently, in May, FCA recalled 410,000 pickups from 2015–2017 for defective tailgates.
    More sales = bigger recalls

Cars are now reported to have around 100M lines of code. You are going to see this all the time. While I know a good bit of that code is for non-critical stuff like the info tainment system, I have to believe there are still millions in the ECU/safety systems. Bugs are going to slip in. Just pray they get caught before the equivalent of a plane goes down. It is one of the reasons I am dubious of AV in the short term. All of that code is safety critical.

Remember how good it was for GM when ignition keys were falling out, losing power-steering assist, failed air-bag deployments and death!

I considered buying new RAM due to disappointing interior of new GM trucks, but after reading problems with new RAM’s on the forums and these recalls, I wouldn’t touch one with a 10 ft. pole. Guess I’ll just wait for new interior in the T1’s.

It's a first year for the 5th gens, it's a general rule to avoid all first year vehicles. I know it was the case with the 98 F-body (even though I had one, I knew of the issues going into it), same with the 2005 Corvette. There's probably more, but those are the first 2 first year vehicles I personally have experience with that I know to avoid. This is what warranties are for. As far as recalls, I've only had one where a bolt was turned... everything else has been a reprogram. I don't get concerned with those, just like when I don't get concerned when my phone or computer has an update.

4.5 years and 73k miles and I had my first warranty issue, broken exhaust manifold studs. But they were replaced with an improved design under warranty, and I'm good to go.

I would never touch a RAM truck anyway they are littered with issues especially with their transmissions. Stick to GM you will be happier and ignore the comments about cheap interiors they are fine.

Keep burying your head in the sand as GM loses market share, it's worked so well for them. You should be on their management team, I'm sure they need another "yes man" to agree that they don't need to change and evolve and things are perfect as is!

Speaking of NEW vehicles, are you ever going to pony up prove you're confident about new GM vehicles and actually buy one? Or just continue being an internet troll?

Does it make you feel like a big man to personally attack people all the time? Just curious what you are trying to compensate for. Welcome to GMI where personal insults are cool, as long as you don't like GM products, right Envoy?

Cute, come in to defend your buddy for making COMPLETELY FALSE attacks on a brand. Some people deserved to be called out on their garbage talk, Botts being the biggest one. To not like Ram, fine, personal preference. To claim that Ram "especially" has transmission issues is asinine. The ZF 8 speed is top notch, and pretty much anyone familiar with... well anything automotive knows that. For him to parrot lies like he does is tiring. I'm only reciprocating the amount of respect he gives out to others who disagree with him. If he wants to be talked to like a full rational adult then perhaps he should learn how to have adult conversations instead of his constant bombardment of irrational, barely coherent fanboy rants. But that's cute, like a big brother you come to the rescue.

But you two are blinded by endless devotion to the badge on the front of your vehicle, so as long as you both play for the same team, parroting outright lies is okay? Got it.

Speaking of vehicles, you gonna buy a 2019 Silverado any time soon? Maybe we'll see pics of THAT one???

The T1’s have no where near the problems as the new RAM’s.
