China: Ford Taurus gets facelift, is alive and well

The Ford Taurus is alive and well and living in China
The Chinese market Taurus just got a facelift for 2020

Even though the Ford Taurus shuffled off this mortal coil in the United States, the nameplate still lives on in China. In fact, the Chinese market Taurus just received a redesign for 2020, gaining a new, plusher trim level as well.

The sedan, solely manufactured by Changan-Ford, is based on the CD4 platform that is also shared by the current Ford Fusion and the Lincoln Continental among others. The 2010-on U.S. Taurus, in comparison, lived on the older CD3 variant. For 2020, there's new LED lighting front and rear: the headlights get a "brow" shaped indicator on top of them, and the taillights now have a length of chrome between them. The new front grille also gets chrome, and the freshly introduced Vignale top trim level also has a bespoke grille and more chrome. It's clear the Taurus is positioned as a formal sedan in China, appointed to attract customers directing the car from the rear seat.

The only engine choice mentioned so far is a 2.0-liter turbo, but it comes in two differently tuned guises, with the higher-spec variant producing 245 horsepower. Earlier, the Chinese Taurus has also been offered with a smaller, 1.5-liter four cylinder and the 2.7-liter Ecoboost V6, but it's possible those two have been dropped from the roster.

Glad to see that the Taurus is doing well overseas, and that Ford is investing in the product.

By all appearances, this is a nicely done update. Not only does it look good (in Vignale guise, anyway), but seems to have a nice overall presence and stance.

That's pretty impressive. I had not idea this product was based on CD4, rather than CD3. That by itself must mean that Ford sees some kind of longevity for large cars in China (at least through this current generation).

Meh, generic sedan, like a Kia whatever. Wish they made it look more like a Ford.

I agree, the new front end looks generic Asian... I think we've seen this front end on another new Ford product, a CUV I believe and I felt the same about it.

It looks like any car, but it's roomy and comfortable. China will continue to enjoy it.

Ford of China has a distinctive new fascia, they have this same sort of grille on the new Chinese Escape. I'm not a fan, but I do like the BMW headlights.

It's still just a bland sedan with upscale details. It's not a big seller either.

I think the styling is a mistake, the Chinese love European western styling,
this will do nothing for saving the car.

They should have just kept the LWB Mondeo specials.
