2021 Ford Explorer gets price cuts

The base Explorer gets the smallest price cut of $540, coming to $33,470 after a $1,245 charge for destination. That figure more than erases the $400 MSRP bump that debuted with the sixth-gen Explorer.

The XLT trim and its returning Sport Appearance Package hop into four-figure savings, starting at $34,245 next year — a $2,925 drop compared to this year. The Explorer Limited will be $3,670 less expensive, starting at $45,955.

The base, XLT, and Limited deliver the same savings in rear- and all-wheel drive. The hybrid Limited HEV rear-wheel drive lops $2,675 off the price for next year, opening the bidding at $51,100. Go for AWD and the cutback climbs to $2,870, to an MSRP of $53,100. The remaining trims only come in AWD — the Explorer ST kicking off at $53,850, saving $2,135 compared to 2020, the 2021 Explorer Platinum charging $55,275, saving $3,770.

On the options list, there's another hefty discount on Equipment Group 202A that bundles LED fog lamps, ActiveX seating surfaces, an eight-way adjustable passenger's seat, and remote start. Instead of costing $4,140 as now, buyers will pay just $3,540.

These new prices are the biggest change for 2021 that we know of so far, the others being more colors added to the exterior palette and slight changes to the ST cabin. Ford Authority has caught prototypes of what it believes is an off-road-oriented model, perhaps an FX4 trim that will join the Explorer lineup. The 2021 crossover is scheduled to enter production September 21 at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant.

That should help a little...too bad they couldn't do something about the front. Hope that is coming soon via an early refresh for MY 2022.

It’s already selling well above last year, the price cuts should align it more with its competitors

That's what I was thinking. Basically a "market adjustment" of sorts.

I'd be ticked if I bought a 2020! Not only was it more expensive, this will drop resale also.

For the most part, it seems like the price cuts come via making some 2020 standard content optional.

Too many production issues with these - I'd be scared to buy one

The front end is different, but considering the leaps other models have taken, I think what throws you off is it "kinda" looks like the old model.

Is that still an issue? Anyone have a "recall count"?

Neighbor has been looking for a new ride, believe it or not, his 2008 Chrysler Town & Country with 297,000 is nearing EOL.

Edge and Explorer have been in the discussion, having said that, where does pricing for the Edge go?

    * Speaking of price changes; anyone remember when GM did a (massive) mid-year price cut on the Envoy and Trailblazer, and sent out new window stickers?

Many are leased, no impact there payments will be similar, and currently there is a $3,000 rebate on the 2020's, that will probably go up as we near end of model year and the 2021's won't have max-incentives until the 2020's are gone.

This happened to me when I bought my 2013 Flex. Even though we got a great deal on it when they cut the MSRP they still kept all the same rebates. We ate about $4k on resale almost immediately when they cut the price.

I don't think it's a simple price cut however, they've removed standard features in those packages and made them optional. They have likely made other cost cutting measures, but it's not quite as broad as it first appears.

It might improve retail residual ratios which are a function of MSRP, improving lease competitiveness

I have talked to 2 people with Explorer ST's................ and one with a Lincoln Aviator Reserve. All three LOVE their vehicles. I mean, gushing .............. nothing bad to say even when I asked about problems. The Explorers only had minor issues that were resolved to the owners satisfaction. The Lincoln had the biggest issue, and she was so impressed with how Lincoln took care of the issue (there was a hairline crack in the transmission housing, and it was seeping fluid) that she is selling all of her friends on the Lincoln. She shopped Jaguar, Mercedes, Audi, Maserati also, and said nothing came close to the luxury you get in the Lincoln. Now, keep in mind that she lives over 100 miles from the nearest Lincoln dealership. She said that compared to her friends with the "prestige" brands, Lincolns handling of the issue made her friends jealous.

I realize my sample size is small, but then so is my town (14K).

Wait on an Edge purchase as it will be switching to the Explorers RWD platform. That combined with hopes that Ford will not cut corners inside the Edge should make it a sporty winner. The Explorer has thos odd gaps in the plastic dash trim. Really no excuse for that. The 1986 Taurus had better fit inside.
