    Ford may be a bit late to the extreme muscle car party, but the wait was well worth it, as the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 is the brand’s most powerful road-legal car ever.

    According to the official numbers released by the Dearborn automaker, the 5.2-liter, supercharged V8 produces a whopping 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet (847 Nm) of torque on premium fuel. As a result, it’s also “the most power- and torque-dense supercharged production V8 in the world”, according to Ford.
    In terms of power alone, the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 slots between the 707 hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and 791 hp Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. It also has 110 horsepower more than the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. However, the bowtie brand’s model has an extra 25 lb-ft (34 Nm) of torque. For comparison, one of the most coveted modern supercars, the McLaren 720S, has 710 hp and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque produced by the 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8.

    LOL.. JZ.. but I will give the Mustang some credit. It can be a beauty.. and I much prefer it over anything from Dodge. Chevy needs to answer this.. I'm sure they were anticipating it. And why not? The ZR1 is in its last year so why not throw that engine over to the Camaro and do some good. The LT5 trumps the Ford engine in plenty of torque, 90lb-ft to be exact

    Looks hot, it's hard not to love the American muscle-cars. Too bad Ford sucks when it comes too interior improvements. They charge so much money and can't they hire Lincoln people to refine the interior a bit?

    Functional can also be attractive...this isn't. Congrats to Ford for making it functional...it just reminds me of an 19th century Locomotive engine with the way the lower front fascia juts out.

    That's how modern aero is, the jutting lower front or "splitter" is very common on any cars set up to do any real track time. Functional aero by nature isn't always pretty, the aspect of having the lower end jut out has to occur on a properly built race car.

    Let's not forget the ZL1. While I'm obviously an advocate for good aero, the Camaro crosses that line to go too far for me. Definitely prefer the Mustang front to the ZL1.

    This is absolutely stunning. Between this and a new Hellcat Redeye Challenger it would be a very tough choice.

    I love all three American badasses (Camaro/Challenger/Mustang).

    They all show we aren't to be f***ed with and we mean business when we want to.

    Show me any other performance cars in the world that match the big 3 power and price. You cant.

    It’s pretty unbelievable that this is where we’re at now. The GT500 has 760 hp and isn’t the most powerful car in the segment. The ZL1 lags behind it with “only” 650 hp. It’s almost a little frightening that any idiot with the cash can buy a car that’s this fast. I can’t believe that a 1000 hp pony car no longer seems like a totally ridiculous thought, but, rather, seems like something that will happen in not too many years time, given how long it’s taken to get to where we are now.

    It will be interesting to see where the GT500 lands on the ladder of speed around the 'Ring. This to me will be the real test of how effective the Ford engineers were on developing this car. Big power doesn't always translate into the fastest lap times as I am sure most know on here. The spec sheet isn't often the defining measure of a track car. Maybe this car will have both a big spec sheet and a fast 'Ring time, they certainly have been working on it long enough to field a competitive car. I personally don't think you can put enough lip stick in or on that architecture for it to play at the highest level. Dodge can put huge power in their sports car and drive in a straight line for at least a quarter mile. They don't pretend it to be any more than that and its pretty damn good at it, and so far nobody is trying to top them in that area. Granted most buyers of the GT500 will take it "Cars and Coffee" and scare the hell out of on coming traffic when they leave. However its performance around the Ring will really define the car's place at least in my opinion. I personally think the A-10 ZLE still top it. The M6 ZLE was 7.16 and the A-10 should be several seconds faster which by current rankings should result in perhaps a jump from up two spots to around number 12 of fastest production cars, depending on what list you use. Time will tell.
